For the turmoil of the era the Fox seemingly had a similar answer throughout: wait it all out in the forest. As they were receiving few visitors, their peculiar sakoku became gradually accepted by other Clans as normal state of affairs an no-one really expected them to turn up. It served them well on more that one occasion: when Matsu Mochihime had the idea that some Gozoku fugitives may be hiding inside Kitsune Mori, it was easy for the Miya to convince the Emerald Champion out of an intervention into the sylvan Fox province pointing to their relative lack of prior engagements with the Triumvirate. They cogently kept their adamant neutrality in all conflicts in their backyard despite the wooing of the Crane and the Crab.

The encapsulation became more conditional than absolute in the latter part of the century. Post-restoration, the Fox resumed their role in the Imperial Court as the voice of the Ki-Rin, though their embassy was small. Kitsune Koshen, the ambassador at that time, was even found conducting meetings with Alejandro de la Corteza, the first official delegate of the king of Merenae to Yugozohime's court. As the tentative entente of Minor Clans started to coalesce around Muhaki's Tortoise, the Fox got somewhat involved, and their samurai became less seldom a sight in the Hubs or in the coastal holdings of the Tortoise. While the heart of Kitsune Mori was sacred, the Fox did log at its outskirts in an era of increasing maritime boldness, when good quality timber was in high demand.

However, when the Ninth Emperor's edicts came into force, the Fox completely withdrew their presence from the Forbidden City and their Champion Kitsune Hashibi asked the Miya to represent Fox interests during their absence. Doji Shioden, who ever had less than amicable disposition toward the Minor Clans during his tenure as the Emerald Champion, chose to eventually advance the case of perceived lesse majeste, piling up accusations by calling out the Fox as complicit in the perpetuation of opium trafficking on the infamous Sparrow Trail. A legion headed by Daidoji Tsukuro came to Kitsune Mori in 496 to mete out Shioden's justice. The Fox envoys met Tsukuro pleading him to withdraw, bringing him the news that the denizens of the forest were stricken by an unknown contagion. Tsukuro, eager to prove himself, chose to advance nonetheless but soon met fierce resistance from Fox troops in an unfamiliar terrain. He decided to pull back only when some of his soldiers came down with the illness that would soon be known as foxpox. His legion left the forest battered and mentally scarred, reporting alien, plague-twisted faces of the Kitsune. Soon the foxpox would spread throughout the Crane provinces, ultimately reaching the Imperial Palace and bringing down Hantei Hohiro, the heir apparent, to the brink of death in 498. However, the Emerald Office adopted an interpretation of events that largely whitewashed their grave blunder and they haven't been called out on it... yet.

Some Clans chose to quarantine the Fox, but as the plague spread wider it made little sense. It didn't prove to be this acute in general, and in 498 ingenious Asako Hisau introduced a simple cure into circulation. The formula was soon spread wide by the Miya. Last reported cases of foxpox occurred in maritime provinces in spring 499. The efficiency with which medical advancement stemmed the plague and saved the Imperial scion convinced many to the path of progress. While some apprehension against the Fox as plague-bearers persists, they usually make little of it, going about their business with no health consequences to those who deal with them.
