“Yul,” Khenbish grunted. The name of his steed was Tarkanate as well, meaning from the far horizon. “You have a dog?” he couldn’t picture the girl accompanied by a war hound, but neither could he imagine a little court dog here. The small breeds were as vicious and deadly as the Courtiers who bred them, but they were still no match for a thousand crushing feet.

Akaichou nodded, inwardly pleased that she seemed to be making a friend. It was the first question he'd asked her. "Yes. His name is Tristan. His owners both passed suddenly and their daughter didn't want him." She stopped at one of the stands, looking over their selections that might interested either of her two four-legged family members. "I wonder if Yul and Bishounen are getting along. Would you like to get something for him while we're here?"

Taking up a protective stance, Khenbish barely even looked at the foods the girl was perusing. At her question he grunted, “no,” adding as an afterthought, “thank you,” in a passing attempt to be polite. He wasn’t heartless, but he was utilitarian, and somewhat insensitive. Food was for the satisfaction of hunger, he would no more buy a ‘treat’ for Yul than he would for himself.

Completing the small purchase, she turned back. She could admire pragmatism. Akaichou liked to partake of the things around her, and spoiling her animals a bit was always an incentive to try something new. Perhaps engaging him with something practical and familiar. "As with any new place, I have been relatively cautious. However, I do not have your skill set. Have you seen anyone or places in particular I should avoid?"

“It’s a decent city. ‘Specially for a port town. Mamluks keep good order. Keep your purse safe and your wits about you.” There were places he hadn’t visited yet, but what he’d seen so far was... impressive. Though he was more accustomed to guarding things, not people, Khenbish peered at the girl, his left eye penetrating, “does something worry you?”

"I helped to settle an argument last night. It erupted due to language barriers which I am lucky enough to build bridges for. But it did make me wonder a bit if that sort of thing is common and how closely to watch Tristan's instinctual behaviors."

She looked up for a second, violet eyes meeting his and smiling before looking down to tuck her purchase into her voluminous sleeve. "I confess, mostly I sought to take advantage of Moto expertise in the matter. I lack your insight."

With a slow, considered nod, "spent a few years escorting caravans in and out of the Jewel. Language barriers weren't my purview." There was a certain economy to his words that did not stem from unfamiliarity with Mekhem, it was his native tongue, after all. Rather, he seemed to prefer to use as few of them as possible.
