Susumu had been searching for new arms for a while now when someone pointed him towards Aram's Hatchet. Despite being a well known establishment he did not have the chance to see it for himself

And so he entered the shop to look at this Aram's wares

"SALAAM ALAIKUUUM!" An old, jolly man called right after the veil of beads and small bells chimed.

''Good afternoon...Sir Aram I presume?'' he said with a bow

''I do not yet speak Mekhem, I am sorry''

"Oooh, language of al-Marun is fine, Sidi! Just tell me what you want, and I, Aram, will try to find it!" The man waved his hands.

Well...this is not going to work

Having nous idea of what the man just said, Susumu shook his head and took a breath. He wondered if Invidi would work here

"I do not understand you...but do you speak this language?"

"Oooh, the Ivory talk, I didn't hear it for a good while!" Aram got excited. "My cousin Ananda is from Upanijandra! Come into my shop, Sri!"

As the shop owner got excited the captain got relieved. He would be able to communicate

"Is that so? I do not believe I had the priviledge of sailing there, is it near the cost?"

He gave the man a genuine smile as he came closer

"I was wondering if you had pistols"

"Oh, Sri, Upanijadra is the key port of the Spice Trade, straight east from Anisrana where I fought back in the day!" He patted his prosthetic leg. "Last time I was there the Templars of the Ebon Stone were just finishing their great fortress at the outlying island. I am surprised you speak the tongue and didn't hear of the place. Must have learned from refugees?" And almost as an afterthought. "Pistols? Sure I do! What kind do you need, for combat, for duels? Any particular origin?"

Susumu frowned and re-focused on the name

"I might have gone there...but we might have called the city another way. What was this about refugees?"

That bugged him for some reason

"I might be looking for a few of them for combat mostly. As for the origins...I have no preferences. I will listen to you suggestions

"Well, you know, the Singhs, Rafiqis and Sureshis, always strangling and slashing each other over power and religion. It's normal that people flee the Raj and try to live elsewhere. My cousin probably moved to the Jewel eventually, like I advised him to do. Hopefully. I haven't heard from him in a long while. This island is far removed from civilisation, news are slow."

He shrugged.

"Merenaese and Thranish are comparable, a question of taste, Sheel are more sturdy and flawless but the range is less. Ours are for officers only... If you got caught with an officer's gun by a Mamluk you'd be in big trouble, Sri."

"Ah, of course" he nodded recalling some of the feuding lords...not different from Rokugan in truth "The powerful always play the same games. I have learned on a voyage there but , strangely enough, I have been practicing more often since I got here with my hosts.

He mulled over the choice of weapons

"What is the range reduction on the Sheel pistol compared to the other ones? Do you make your own?"

"I just tweak a little, and I sometimes accept second-hand things. But in general I buy from weapon producers and traders what I think will sell." Aram tugged his beard in thought. "By 10 feet even."

''10 feet?!'' he was befuddled but shook his head regaining focus

''So what is the total range for a Sheel pistol...please don't say 10 feet. At that distance I could just run up to an enemy and club him with it''

"If you were strong, carried a big blade and the opponent had no armour. If not, the pistol is still better in the hands of a sharpshooter or a gunslinger. Besides, if you fight the way the islanders often do, you keep it in the off-hand. The bullet will still reach further targets, but the precision is less. You need to know a lot about how the ball flies. Some do."

The Mantis pondered the question

''I see...but what do you mean by 'sturdy' and 'flawless'?''

He let out a sigh

''As you may have guessed I am shopping for my first pistols. I might duel wield them or use one and a knife in the other hand. What do you think will work better.'' he smiled to Aram ''You are the veteran here after all, I'll follow your wisdom.''

"That it rarely breaks when you drop it in the heat of battle after a shot and it rarely misfires."

Aram pondered.

"I'd go with a standard Merenaese then, Sri. Those who use pistols often have 2-3 of them, so get ahold of one before you determine what suits your hand and style best."

''Sounds reasonnable'' he agreed

''I would hate to impose but could I handle some of them to get the feel?''

"Of course. This one is both typical and well-made." Aram placed a box on the table.

Susumu inspected the pistol with an expert eye before taking it into his hand to get the feel

"It is indeed of good quality and I do not dislike the feel...how much would those be, Sri Aram?"

"100 silver dinars would be a fair price, Sri, but I like you so I'll make it 90."
