“Have you found anything?” “No, my friend. No one has heard anything of her.” “What about José?” “Nothing since he left.” “Good.” Edogawa sighed. Quick Lopez gave a quizzical look. “I thought you wanted to find them?” “I do, but I also don’t want anyone else finding them.” “Ah, I see. This must be some woman. She is Merenaese?” “Yes, she is. And yes, she is.” “There are others, señor Edogawa. Many who would be happy to be of… service to you.” “It’s not like that, Lopez.” he shook his head, grinning in amusement. “That’s not what I want, not anymore.” The Merenaese nodded in understanding. “The quiet one would be angry if you did. I like her. But, I do not think I’d like to see her angry.” “You are a wise man.” the Miya laughed. “Have there been any issues in La Ultima Esperanza that need my attention?” "No." he shook his head. "Most have adjusted to how things are now. You've given the craftsmen purpose and value. The sailors wait for the opportunity to join the voyage. Our merchants are happy to supply the ships and the school. The others... I am taking care of the others." "No issues with the Mantis?" "Nothing new." he shrugged. "They seem content with what they gained when Pavo left. For now, at least." "Good." Edogawa nodded. "At least I don't have to worry about that right now." "Is there something I can take care of?" the man tapped one of his pistols, a reminder of his reputation as El Rapido.. "No." the Imperial chuckled. "It's my mother. She's been talking about my betrothal again." "The quiet one?" "Hopefully. But, she's mentioned others, a Lion in particular." "I still do not understand all these animals. These are the mountain dwellers?" "No. The proud warriors." the shipwright explained. "Who take insult easily and do not forgive it." "I can appreciate that." Lopez smiled. "So can I, when it doesn't interfere with my plans." "What will you do if this does?" "I have no idea." he admitted with a dismissive wave. "Let's get some dinner." |
