Up the road to the southeast from the West Port, near the top of the first hill, lies old man Genta's mill. Genta is a merchant and a craftsman in Tortoise employ who brought the secrets of papermaking to the island, though this is just one of his occupations for the local community, in constant demand for quality timber for houses, vessels, furniture, crafting materials or repairs. The walled compound is close to the jungle thicket, and on guard during the night in case predators decide to encroach. It is built over the Razorback River, one of the only two on the island. The sharp descent of its waters fuels the wheel that provides the energy for the mill. Genta employs about two dozen people. He and his men know the jungle scaling the southern slopes of Mount Kappa quite well, so is also usually involved in hunting parties and procuring rare species for personal fancy. Apart from lumberjacks and carpenters he also has huntsmen and tanners among his workers. The daily forays into the jungle are usually a composite endeavour, with hunters guarding the lumberjacks while looking for additional opportunities. Apart from the loud mill, the smelly tannery and kennel where dogs guard animals in cages, far more often colourful parrots than endemic jaguars, there is also a hunting hall, a quasi-inn where roasted or smoked peccary meat can be eaten, a fruity liquor drunk and stuffed trophies admired. Genta usually doesn't mind if someone stays for a night or two if they have some business in the jungle and want to set out on first light. |
