As the day passed into evening, Hikari's exploratory trek across the island found her discovering what was obviously an expansive cemetary. A discovery that was certainly of potential relevance to a Jade Magistrate. More than one kind of monster might be found in such places, after all.

"So many different types," she mused to herself as she saw the different styles of tombs and burial. Even aside from the potential relevance to her career, one could learn a wealth of information about the different cultures on the island just from these gravestones and tombs.

"I help you how?" A man in what looked like monk's robes with tonsured head approached her. His face was sun-scorched so it was hard to determine the age, but he was not young. He spoke broken Rokugani. "I Ben. Honour meet."

It was good to know not everyone on this island was ignorant of Rokugani; even if this one's grasp of the language left something to be desired. Still, it was the effort that mattered.

She turned, looked at him, then gave him a small bow.

"My apologies. I found myself wandering in here during my exploration of the island. I am Seppun Hikari, Jade Magistrate."

"Aha, jade. Very nice." Ben nodded in understanding, taking magistrate for a word meaning merchant. "You look rich. Saluting, saluting. Need bury who?"

"Nobody," she said, patient with the old man. "Like I said, I was just exploring when I found this place. There seem to be a great many people buried here."

"Oh yes. Many die. People born and dead all time. Life such." Ben nodded sagely. "All need good bury and rest. Ben takes care."

"I see," she said.

If they were in Rokugan, hardly a soul would ever talk to the man. Someone like Hikari would be expected to stay far away. Here, at least, she could somewhat set aside such strictures for the sake of knowledge. And there was her Jade curiosity.

"Ever have any trouble with those that don't stay at rest?"

"Yes. Graves digmen very annoying." Ben may not have fully understood the question.

"I meant to ask... if you have trouble with ghosts and such?"

She wondered if perhaps his Rokugani was just not up to snuff.

"Would Merenaese be easier to understand?" she had not had much opportunity to try the language out, but she was reasonably certain she understood it enough to hold a coherent conversation at least.

"Infinitely, Senorita." Ben smiled in relief. "Ghosts, you say? It's hard to say really. I believe that some linger but I don't see them and they don't trouble me. Though sometimes someone comes up and tells me about being haunted and requests the grave to be dug up and check what's the matter. I rarely agree. My religious views may be strange to some, but I believe in one thing firmly, the sanctity of burial. Corpses put in the ground should stay there rather than be troubled for whatever reason."

"The corpses don't always agree, though."

She looked across the graveyard for a moment.

"Since I *am* here... I have been tasked with ensuring the proper rites are followed for those of us lost at sea. I had thought to create a space elsewhere for such things, however I should probably ask if you have a workforce at your disposal that could aid with the less pleasant aspects of such things. And also... what the local customs would be in regards to the erection of a shrine. We would not wish to offend anyone."

"I don't think you would offend, Senorita. This place is for all dead and none seem too offended. I try to follow the proper rights as close as I can regardless of who ends his journey here. If you mean earthwork I usually do it myself or with one-two more men who come over. Little Aqahba has good stonemasons, good carpenters can be found in the port, but both groups have their financial demands."

He looked around.

"If your people want a place of memory somewhere here, we can arrange it."

"I shall have to see what are our own efforts can yield first."

"As you wish, Senorita. I am a friend of all those who respect their dead."
