Premise

While awaiting Jama's arrival to Dragon's Guard Miya Odorihime advances her own agenda by calling a garden party for the Imperial Explorers to the Orange Blossom Estates. Her ulterior motive is to have all the bachelors in one confined space to watch and assess...

Mechanics

  • Mamma Miya arranges the party in a way that the bustle does not allow for introspection or too much concentration. One has to trust their skills in guiding them through the perilous waters of casual conversation. The amount of Raises one can call in this event is determined not by Void Ring but by the rank in Skill used for the roll.
  • Social instinct will let you survive this meeting. Unless otherwise stated, all rolls in the event are based on Awareness, even for the Skills not usually associated with this Trait.
  • Each roll is against TN 15. You roll up to thrice in the event, each time selecting a different option.
  • Mamma Miya sees almost all topics of conversation as ones that can be made appropriate by taking the right angle. Each Skill used for the event is treated as Social Skill, but loses all other Skill Types for the purpose of triggering additional effects. Advantages that offer phantom ranks in those Skills still apply.
  • Mamma Miya makes mental notes about how well you handle various topics and learns a lot from your interventions. Her opinion is graded in Talk Points. You get a Talk Point for each success, plus one for each Raise on a particular roll. Failure of any kind makes you lose 1 Talk Point and consititutes a Minor Breach of Etiquette.
  • Mamma Miya assesses the ability to maintain the right course of conversation without disclosing one's shortcoming or regaling over the conversation partner. Responsiveness and an ability to meet your interlocutor halfway matters as much as displays of your awesomeness. Each increment of 10 away from the final TN of the roll deducts 1 Talk Point from the result, to the minimum of -1. If the result reaches -1 this way, it also constitutes a Minor Breach of Etiquette.
  • Major and Blasphemous Breaches of Etiquette are sufficient grounds for a iaijutsu challenge.
  • The haze of the party does not allow you to measure your responses, you must go with the flow. You cannot cherry-pick dice but have to format the roll as either keeping highest or keeping lowest.
  • Unless otherwise stated, Benten's Blessing does not apply to a given roll.
  • Magic is cheating, or at least Odorihime thinks so. Any active spell, kiho or tattoo constitutes a Major Breach of Etiquette and a penalty of -2 Talk Points on a roll it applies to.
  • Mamma Miya is a guardian of the Celestial Order, and awards more credit to those higher in it. Some advantages add to your pool of Free Raises that can be spent on any of the rolls in the event. Those are: each rank of Social Position, each Ally of Influence 3 or 4, World of the Daimyo, Benten's Blessing, Darling of the Court.
  • Bayushi Courtier Rank 1 Technique awards 1 Free Raise per roll.
  • Mamma Miya appreciates some topics more than the others in how she sees a samurai's value. The amount of VIPs awarded for a successful roll depends on the category. Boring has x1 multiplier to VIPs received from Talk Points after the roll, Interesting x2 and Fascinating x3. At the end of the event add your Glory Rank in VIPs to the total.
  • This thread is meant for rolls and calculations only. While there is no obligation to broach the topic used on-screen in the dedicated role-playing thread, players are encouraged to try to do so!
  • Those who skip the event despite receiving an invitation commit Minor Breach of Etiquette, and their final VIP score for the event amounts to their Glory Rank.

Rewards

Lots of VIPs! However, this is only a part of the story. Once all the VIPs from the event per player are summarised, they are broken into Otoko List and Onna List, from the highest result to the lowest. What would the Imperial Matchmaker do with those lists, hmmm?

Married people don't go on the lists but keep all their VIPs. If a married person would be in top three on any of the above lists, he or she can take Miya Odorihime as a 4/1 Ally alongside an Obligation to chaperone the Imperial Explorers during the journey...

How to Role-Play the Event

You can start or join up to three threads in the timeslot the garden party is happening in, all in the Northern Outskirts subforum. To facilitate RP, try to avoid clear references to sequencing of the topics being broached, so that people who roll something as third in order can still join threads when the topic was broached as first, and vice versa. This is technically all happening in the same timeslot, in this or that quiet or not-so-quiet corner of the Orange Blossom Estates. It's best that when you start the thread you encode the # number of the conversation topic in its title so people who want to talk the same or similar topic know what they're joining. In addition, it's good to OOCly agree on meeting with another player there if you want to have a thread on a topic with someone in particular. All threads are Open, so more than two characters can join all of them. For instance, joining with option #6 requires no justification.

The above unpacking from what is usually one intimidatingly massive single-slot thread where you can easily miss out on response in the flood of those that don't address you is to make roleplaying the party more comfortable. The one central thread is still available and any number of your conversations can be posted in it if this is what you wish, but as long as you stick to concurrent threads you don't have to. The exception happens if anyone commits Major or Blasphemous Breach of Etiquette. This can have central consequences so should be cross-posted to the central thread, so that NPC or PC reaction or iaijutsu challenge over this can happen. Unless things get disproportionately grave those will be adjudicated as 'first blood' duels to be resolved on the next day. For the dramatic purpose if such duels happen the intra-Explorer champions will be preferred, waiving same-Clan clause. In IC terms think of it as a 'le gasp' moment of all around, an intermission of the party buzz with awkward silence when the spotlight hits the social offender.

If you choose not to roleplay the discussions it's fine, they can still happen off-screen. You still need to post in the central thread if you commit Major or Blasphemous Breach of Etiquette.

Kitsu Keiji mingled among the partygoers, drifting from one conversation to the next. His fanboyish descriptions of the Lion stomping the Crane in battle were seen as a little excessive by some of the guests, but his love of sailing and interesting theories of what became of the Crab legion in the Kitsune Mori more than made up for his earlier missteps.

Unlike the many youngsters here, Utsusemi was an experienced woman. Married, which probably was to some dismay for the Mamma Miya, but a breath of fresh air in many ways. Not only because she seemed to have an amazing way with words as she spoke, in addition to clever wit that gave quite many entertaining barbs about certain artistic choices these days.

And when she had a quiet moment, the two women chatted about some of the more shocking news of the Empire. Both agreed that it was absolutely horrible what happened to the Kitsu Tombs, and Utsusemi managed to drop some juicy bits to the Miya matron about how such a thing could have been done...

Not wanting to refuse the invite, though not really keen on going, Koharu resigned herself to participating. It would be nice to socialise she told herself. However, by the end of it the most fun she'd experienced had actually involved politely trading barbs with an Ikoma, as well as listening in and gently participating in a quiet girls conversation. The topic? Pillow books that are popular in the Capital. As for socialising in general, well... when the Matchmaker had walked nearby she had tried to slip in to a safe bit of insubstantial chatter. It had failed. Those nearby weren't really interested and she'd been left isolated for a few moments.

Oh well, at least it had been in passing. After that she'd found the pillow book ladies. That had been something.

Nonetheless, as soon as she could politely excuse herself she did!

This was going to be tricky.

While the first subject thrusted upon him was on a fairly boring matter as far as he was concerned, he managed not to squash his interlocutor's pueril assesments but correct them in an acceptable manner.

Sailing, however, now that was his subject! The energy in his voice was clear and he spoke with great eloquence about the capacity of the Great Ships of the imperial navy. He realised a little later that he might have monopolised too much of the conversation

The last subject was tricky...but managed to highlight the finesse of the Dragon troops in using the Lion's overreach in the Phoenix's lands against them

Though he was pre-occupied with his preparations, Rokuro made time to stop by.

He'd been told it was important, so socialization was performed. Sometimes duty was easy, and sometimes, it was complicated and fraught with small talk.

The residents of the party were about to find out what happened when they opened themselves up to the small talk of a knowledgable sparrow.

Soon, the hapless souls caught by his lectures found themselves abandoned as the conversation slowly shifted away, leaving a small circle of hapless courtiers to learn the finer details of irrigation, bookkeeping, legal precedents, opium's impact on local communities, and taoist interpretations of modern religious trends.

It was... something. Perhaps too much, really.
