Premise In the best bureaucratic tradition of civil examination the top candidates for captains will be revealed through a written exam! Moshi Noriko, the Headmistress of the College, has organised a big enough a room in the Campus to accommodate all aspirant officers of the Imperial Explorers. The exam has a time limit, and is well-overseen, with Yajinden and Tsugiko hovering at the sidelines as Noriko gives them instructions on how to proceed. The eight top scorers will have an audience with Hantei Jama tomorrow... --- Mechanics:
--- Rolls
--- Results Sum them up. They'll be ranked, and eight best will be presented to Hantei Jama for further consideration. |

Wata breathed slowly, this was his chance to make up his big mistake, maybe even be congratulated by the Prince even. His hands were shacking... it was going to be hard to focus if he let his thoughts get the best of him. The ronin started his exam, his first question was mathematics, hopefully it was a calculus that he knew how to do, one he had done many times with Gusai Susumu as they traveled the coast of Rokugan. It was a question he got through with ease, continuing to weather forecast. Normally he would check on his own feelings of the air, evaluate according to what he felt from the elements, but he could figure out. He breathed, and the answer was clear, Rat, early winter, changing winds, change of humidity in the air, I got this. The ronin suddenly stumbled, Gaijin!, his hands shook a bit more, it was more than he expected, but he had time, he could go through the question, and he did. The procedure for contact was a common knowledge, it was something that was taught in the first days of the Explorer academy, and he still remembered the day with fondness, and specially how they had made them practice for hours. Next was his favorite question, shipbuilding. He described the functioning of the Imperial carrack as well as the main sections of the vessel, he could not stay more on the question, time was running out and he wanted to get as many questions done as possible. Sailing, gybing when a storm is a mile away, coming from the port. The ronin flew through the question it was far too easy to spend time on it. He finished it with enough time for one more question, he would get a little ahead of the rest as he answered that one. Terms on the vessel, Wata listed all the nautical signals he knew, quickly, starting from the hardest to the easiest that everyone would get... and then time was up, and as his exam was turned in, he noticed the question... starboard!? I sailed the ship with the storm on port! So dumb! But there was nothing more he could do. -Lore: Mathematics. FR to reduce TN, TN 15.: 32 - 1 EP -Lore: Nature (Air). + 1 FR for Points. Hinami was very tired after her meeting with Odorihime, which made her lose focus during the exam. She knew she was not the best for this kind of position but it was expected from her to be here. At least she tried to answer what she knew and even manage to give some good answers but nothing special. In the end, she was not prepared to captain a ship. *********************** [OOC-Rolls] 1) Disposition Perception/Investigation - 17 |Failed [TN20] 2) Disposition Willpower/Etiquette - 34 |Pass [TN20] 3) Disposition Reflexes/Calligraphy - 17 |Failed [TN20] 1) Exam Sheet Sailing/Intelligence, +1 Artisan Poetry - 20 |Passed [TN20]

The priestess sat at her designated spot. She let out a fake yawn and looked at the prayer etched onto her wrists, underneath her sleeves. She murmured along to it and, once done, placed her finger upon her mask and took a breath. "Thank you," she mouthed to her faithful friendly kami. As she had told the Lion, honor was an illusion. It was her right to cheat on this exam so that she could further her position. The mask, as much as she adored it, made it difficult for her to sort out what was in front of her. She was also forced to write slowly and deliberately in order to be sure that her answers were correct. Still, with the help of the fire kami and her own discipline, she never felt tired as she worked on the problems in front of her. It was almost as if she had lived at the Golden Sun Bay her entire life. The details were vividly in front of her. She required no map for reference; she simply knew where to place every landmark. And missing piece was connected by the fire kami prodding her thoughts. The next set of questions pertained to rationing and logging. She briefly thought on her own paperwork for Hikari-sama but banished the thought so that she could fabricate fictional ones for the test at hand. Finally, she had to answer questions on actual sailing. Though relatively inexperienced, her obsessive readings and constant abuse of the fire kami's blessings made the calculations solvable without too much issue. --- Spellcasting D1 LE Stealth/Agility TN 15, VP Spent: 5d10o10k4 27 -0.1 Honor for Low Skill D1 LE Mental Quickness TN 15, VP Spent: 6d10o10k4 32 +1k1 to Intelligence Rolls for the Event Disposition: D1 LE Perception/Investigation TN 20: 3d10o10k2 10 D1 LE Etiquette/Willpower TN 20: 4d10o10k3 29 D1 LE Calligraphy/ReflexesTN 20: 4d10o10k2 18 D1 LE Athletics/Stamina TN 20: 4d10o10k3 28 2 Bonus Rolls Exam Sheet: D1 LE Craft:Cartography/Intelligence TN 30, 2 CR, MQ, +2 from Calligraphy: 8d10o10k5+2 36 3 Exam Points D1 LE Calligraphy/Intelligence TN 30, 2 CR, MQ, +2 from Calligraphy: 7d10o10k5+2 36 3 Exam Points D1 LE Sailing/Intelligence TN 25, 1 CR, MQ, +2 from Calligraphy: 6d10o10k5+2 27 2 Exam Points D1 LE Commerce/Intelligence TN 25, 1 CR, MQ, +2 from Calligraphy: 6d10o10k5+2 33 2 Exam Points D1 LE Lore: Mathematics/Intelligence TN 25, 1 CR, MQ, +2 from Calligraphy: 6d10o10k5+2 34 2 Exam Points D1 LE Craft: Cartography/Intelligence TN 30, 2 CR, MQ, +2 from Calligraphy, Bonus Question: 8d10o10k5+2 33 3 Exam Points D1 LE Calligraphy/Intelligence TN 30, 2 CR, MQ, +2 from Calligraphy, Bonus Question: 7d10o10k5+2 36 3 Exam Points 18 Exam Points |

Yasuhiro hadn't planned to sit for the Captains exam, honestly he just wasn't that interested in command one of the vessels. His grandmother on the other hand had other ideas. She had insisted he try his hand at it so he did. One didn't argue with the spirits of their ancestors after all. It was a boring affair, and it left him bone tired, but after a it was all said and done he had scored fairly well. Bellena approached the Campus that evening a bit conflicted. Her conversation with Yajinden had been troublesome for many reasons. She still had much to consider, but with time limited she would have to take this exam now, or never. She greeted Yajinden as she arrived, and as promised he let her have access to the exam. She sat down in her cubicle and waited for the test to arrive. Seeing the prompts she chuckled a little. The level of information requested was so basic. She worried that if this was truly the standard by which the leaders were being measured, there were sure to be problems out on the sea. She worked her way through the exam quickly and stayed focus throughout. What she lacked in volume of questions answered she more than made up for in the quality of the answers she did provide. ---- Rolls: 1 Success on Preliminary Rolls 1) Linguistics Roll 1: 5 Exam Points 2) Firearms Roll: 4 Exam Points 3) Lore: Math Roll: 3 Exam Points 4) Craft: Cartography Roll: 2 Exam Points 5) Sailing Roll: 2 Exam Points 6) Linguistics Roll 2: 5 Exam Points Total: 21 Exam Points |

Voice Over: These are the voyages of the sailing ship Shark Fin, on its 5 year voyage of Exploration, Discovery, and Conquest for the Empire. Captain's Log, Month of the Monkey, Supplemental While on a routine survey mission in the Ivindian Sector, lookouts detected a tropical storm of unusual intensity off the starboard bow. Skillfully gybing against the wind allowed us to outpace the storm, but this maneuver took us off course, leaving us in uncharted waters. After being becalmed for 4 days, I ordered the quartermaster to institute a system of strict rationing. There was some grumbling among the men, especially when the sake ration was halved, but all could see the necessity of the harsh measure. On the fifth day a gentle breeze arose, allowing us to take sail again. With our navigational instruments we were able to calculate our correct latitude, and I determined to sail in an easterly direction until some landmark could be discovered. Land was sighted on the seventh day, soon determined to be a small, previously undiscovered island which the crew quickly named Thankthekamiitsland (name pending approval by the Imperial Cartographer). I led a landing party ashore where we discovered a rich island paradise and encountered a primitive native tribe who attempted to offer us gifts of tropical birds and tropical fruit, both of which were determined to be unusually delicious. Per the standard operating procedure for First Contact with unknown gaijin tribes, we launched an immediate attack. With the element of surprise and the barbarians' complete lack of weapons and military training, our victory was swift and decisive. Regretfully, my second best kimono was ripped during the conflict. The barbarian chieftain's daughter offered to mend my garments as a peace offering, which I permitted. Afterwards, we discovered that by the customs of this primitive tribe, this had caused me to become married to the gaijin princess - a situation which has proven difficult to explain to the Imperial Chaperones assigned to our vessel. In the meantime, having repaired the sails and re-provisioned our stores, the Shark Fin is now preparing to cast off to continue our voyage of peaceful exploration. -- Disposition: Investigation 23 hits TN20 Etiquette 17 missed TN20 Calligraphy 23 hits TN20 Athletics 17 missed TN20 2 bonus questions Exam 1: Draw a map with 2 raises, Craft: Cartography 33 hits TN30, 3 Exam Points Exam 2: Gybing with 2 raises, Sailing 30 hits TN30, 3 Exam Points Exam 3: Rationing with 2 raises, Commerce 42 hits TN30, 3 Exam Points Exam 4: Captain's Log with 2 raises, Calligraphy 42 hits TN30, 3 Exam Points Exam 5: First Contact with 2 raises, Lore: Gaijin 25 missed TN30 Exam 6: Elaborate on drawing a map with 2 raises, Craft: Cartography 45 hits TN30, 3 Exam Points Exam 7: More Gybing with 2 raises, Sailing 23 missed TN30 Total: 15 Exam Points |

Zabieru hated exams. He had never been too good at written exams, despite being a well-read and intelligent person, and that hadn't gotten much better with age. Sure he was charming and incredibly sharp with both wit and steel but that just didn't translate to learning, at least not very often. It was a fault of character and one he had been dutifully trying to eliminate through a strict regime of study and lecture but alas it was not rare the occasion when more carnal pleasures superseded such academic ventures. Once at the exam he employed every resource he could muster, short of cheating, to improve his chances. The questions were for the most unknown to him so he focused on those he knew better, though in hindsight he realized the crass errors he commited. He came out of the ordeal conflicted and angry. He had been incredibly average. --- Willpower/Etiquette: 29 - 1 Extra Question Reflexes/Calligraphy: 15 - Failed Stamina/Athletics: 33 - 1 Extra Question Perception/Investigation: 16 - Failed Q1: Commerce - 51 (2CR) - 3 Points Q2: Sailing - 33 - 1 Point Q3: Linguistics (Merenae) - 20 (1CR) - Failed Q4: Oratory - 15 - Failed Q5: Intimidation - 21 - 1 Point Q6: Commerce - 27 (2CR) - Failed Q7: Commerce - 33 (2CR) - 3 Points 8 points |

Written exams! The truest test of one's worth and ability. Or at least, the most manageable. It makes sense as a place to start. Tori joins the exam, less in pursuit of a new, bigger ship, and more as a show of support and interest. She's happy with the Stingray. Then again, she'd be happy with the larger ship, too, even if it would hurt to leave the Stingray. Perhaps her distraction hurts her performance on the test, but she's generally strong in written exams anyways, and doesn't feel much pressure to aim for the top score on this one, so she lets her abilities flow naturally. Between her time with the trading council, her time with the naval academy, and her own research, she has a realm of expertise very well suited to the exam. Rokuro arrived at the test in a relatively good mood, after his meeting with the Miya matriarch. He didn't really do a very good job of preparing, nor did he show extensive knowledge, but his ability to lay out detailed supply plans, bookkeeping methods, and, bizarrely, the mechanical aspects of ship maintenance, was impressive in it's own right. If nothing else, his grasp of the details involved in keeping the fleet floating, fed, and armed was worth something, though what, exactly, was anyone's guess. Kenzo grimaced as he sat down to take the examination. Examinations had sometimes featured rather heavily during college. There were several reasons he disliked them. The need to adhere firmly to someone else's schedule. The particular format; the method he used to keep his notes worked much better for him than what he was forced to use. And now, here he was again. He briefly scanned the test, wincing. There was so much on there that he didn't know. Well, there was no help for it. Cracking his knuckles audibly, he began to work. ... As it turned out, it was mostly his extensive knowledge of firearms that helped him. The flourishes he added there earned him extra points. But an uncareful reading in a question about weather patterns cost him time, as he had to hurriedly go back and correct his error. Kenzo grimaced as he scratched out an entire section.
