It is an elegant, rectangular square that is the heart of the mercantile nature of the East Port... despite not being too busy. Usually it is not crowded and the soft hum of sycamores and lemon trees remains distinguishable at most hours as the conversations and traffic across it are usually hushed and dignified. This is the Square of Contracts, where what is truly important is what lines its edges. And those are the bureaus of the most powerful stakeholders in the transoceanic trade. Bureaus, not workshops, not shops. Nothing is sold directly here, even the cash and the specie is rarely processed outside of the bank of de Almerias at its northwesternmost corner called La Casa de las Cuentas. What is being traded are contracts, cargo or hold shares, letters of credit, bills of remuneration and plenty of other financial instruments, as well as insurances and legal services. Each of the sigils on tenement houses represents families or enterprises who deal in thousands of pieces of gold or copper. The greatest of them hold the right to rent parts of the cargo hold in the seasonal galleon which traverses the ocean between Los Muelles de La Tortuga and La Corteza in Merenae, from where oriental goods are often further re-exported to the Tarkhanate or the Sheel Kingdom.

The most notable tenement sigils belong to the Merenaese families: Quijanos, Bregos, Almerias, Arrigos or Algurias. The governess of the West Port maintains her own office here, as do the Blochers of the Sheel, the Wenhams of Thrane or al-Basiris of... anywhere across the Tarkhanate ever since this House of Dahab joined blood with the family of the Grand Mufti. The offices along the square, usually doubling as fancy day residences, luxuriously and fashionably arranged to impress, are good places to have a private talk with representatives of greater commercial entities over a glass of wine or a game of chess or cards. Some of them try to distinguish themselves and attract refined partners by organising exhibitions or recitals within their compounds. Many of them retain warehouses as well as workshop spaces for processing and manufacturing goods, just not here, but somewhere deeper in La Nueva Esperanza, the Hoof or in the West Port. If money was a god, this Square would be her most sacred temple in this part of the world.

Casa de Las Cuentas is no longer managed by Jose de Almeria as he sailed away for Merenae.
