The long, sandy beaches of the southern stretch of Kameyama are egg-laying grounds for sea turtles - and the hunting grounds for the predatory ghost crabs preying on the turtle progeny as it hatches and struggles to get into the ocean. It is considered virtuous and lucky among the Tortoise to go to the beaches during the hatching and join the fray on the side of the little ones, fighting back against the yellow peril.
What is the result of it is bountiful material for the local delicacy: sopa de venganza, or vengeance soup, a very spicy crab soup on chili-saturated coconut milk. The soup is often served in local homes for first-time visitors to test their genuine intention to be friendly toward the household, and the island denizens in general. There is in fact a variety in how it is prepared, based on the species of crabs used, since the horseshoe cousins of the true turtle killers, among other local species of crab, are often held accountable for the atrocities of the yellow shells in a reminder than in any outburst of violence it is not only the sides of the conflict that suffer. So far the taste for vengeance has failed to dent the crab populations, however, as they manage to aggressively multiply.
