Throughout the morning hours, various low-ranking members of the expedition had been tasked with setting up the site where the ceremony was to take place; mainly to make sure there was enough seating, and to set up a space filled with flowers, candles and burning incense. Unlike ordinary funerals, there were no actual bodies to prepare and subsequently bury, thus the whole thing might feel more like a mass memorial service than anything else.

Seating was arranged so that those with any family ties to those lost were closest to the front, followed by the captains and first officers of the ships that lost crew, after which priority was given to other officers and those who had asked for special dispensation due to personal ties such as friendship.

Though there was an air of solemn reverence reverberating through the area, conversation prior to the ceremony itself was not frowned upon.

The Prince would eventually arrive with his entourage.

Suihime was there to the side, remaining quiet. She wouldn't miss this

Anzai arrived. He was exceedingly solemn. His heart and thoughts heavy as he prepared to allow himself an opportunity to say goodbye.

Susumu was not a religious man but he still took those things seriously. So he was there with his best garb, looking contemplative.

Ran was there to observe and pay respects.

The ceremony itself was carried out in a manner perfectly in keeping with proper Rokugani theology. The various rites of purification that were rendered somewhat irrelevant by the lack of bodies were nonetheless still engaged in to the degree that made sense given the circumstances. As part of the process, each of the deceased was granted a new name; a kaimyƍ; written down with great care for all to see. The names grew longer the more accomplished the deceased was, and served the purpose of preventing the return of their spirit should anyone call their name. Given the circumstances, some present might've allowed a sigh of relief to escape their lungs when the process was finally complete. And then again when the final rites of purification and sendoff were finished.

Of course, it was yet to be over; the priestess stepped forward to offer those gathered some final words.

"To a samurai, death in the service of his family or clan, is no great tragedy. It is an honor. More so when it comes in the service of the Empire as a whole. Sacrifice is what defines us as a people. It is what sets us apart from those who are foreign to us. The willingness to sacrifice ourselves for each other and our way of life, and the knowledge that we will be reborn; greater because of it. In this, the men and women we are here to honor have shown themselves to be everything we could have asked of them, and the heavens will acknowledge it as surely as we will. And let us not forget the purpose they have given themselves to. To bring the light of Rokugan beyond the horizon, united as a people. They stood upon the deck of their ships, carrying different names, lords, and ambitions. But when work had to be done, they stood as one. Let us not forget that, and let us honor their sacrifice accordingly."

The words were pretty, though Hikari was not the finest of public speakers perhaps. Still, it might've hit the mark. And if not, well then at least the part where everyone had to sit still and listen was over. With the main ceremony over, individuals were encouraged to pay their respects in private, or with the assistance of Hikari's religious services if need be. There was a small altar set up, with the list of names and incense, that took the place of the deceased themselves.

It was also permitted for people to speak amongst themselves, provided of course they did so at a respectable volume.

The Jade Yoriki also attended the funeral. She made herself available to her superior if there was ever a need for her. But for the most part, the Yogo stayed silent in respects for the deceased.

...or this is how it would play out in an ideal world where forces greater than Hikari chose to stay away.

But they didn't. The sky darkened and shed first lighting when a great serpent emerged from the southern waters, bringing some of their dead during the storm hooked on its scales. In an overture to a pandemonium, the giant orochi started to swirl and rock, making great waves that would rush toward the shores like small tsunami, causing panic and havoc as people tried to evacuate before water would claim them. In the swirling, the bodies got tossed away over many hundred feet, falling into the water and onto the shores. In its final act of destruction it hit Yamato Maru with its tail and sent it toward the shores where it dug in the shallows, heavily damaged, losing crew during its short flight. Finally, it dropped back into the waves and vanished. It all lasted maybe a minute or two...

But it was not over. Not yet.

What was that?!

As the panic took hold of the assembly, the Mantis rose to his feets and rushed to help the evacuation and was ready to dive in the water tosave those who did not make it in time. He had become a darn good swimmer thanks to Hassei's teaching and would not shy away from making good use of it.

The Yogo kept her scroll satchel close to her chest as she watched the events unfold. I really ought to learn a prayer for cleaning. Oh but would the kami find such a thing worthy? She made her way through the waters with great effort; swimming was still not her strongest suit.

What in the world?!

Suihime's eyes widened at the scene, and she was frozen for a few moments as the scene played out. When she came to focus once more, people were lying all over the place in the water and the sand. It was a horrifying sight. She acted more on instinct after this, moving to help the samurai out swimming by bringing the rescued people back onto shore; she was a weak swimmer, so didn't even try to go further out. Better to help on land than be a hinderance at sea

((Enter from over here))

Panic, why did people always panic? Certainly there was a large sea snake thing wrecking destruction everywhere, and boats, people, and water flying everywhere. That didn't mean panic helped matters though. The young Lion was calm; as calm as he could manage at least, as he jogged towards the carnage, bow still strung and looped across his chest. He tried to let his mind work as he viewed the field, treating in something like a battle field.

What were the tools he had in hand? Where were the people of Importance? Jama? His entourage? There was the whip crack of command in his voice as he started to order those men and women standing gaping, to action. A few were sent to fetch the landing craft from the Yamato, others to look for rope, paddles anything that could help them at the moment. Getting a boat in the water, would save far more then swimming.

Yasuhiro didn't stop moving though, his commands were married to action on his own part as he attempted to restore order, and get as many as possible from the water, foremost the prince and any of his followers. He never entered the water himself though, nor did he stop observing the surroundings, the creatures could always return after all.

This just wasn't fair. It was far beyond what was normally heaped upon her. Hikari could handle it when it was just aimed at her, but this was something else entirely...

...despite knowing the risk she personally faced, Hikari rushed forward and into the water. She knew there was little hope to hurt the Orochi enough to back off, not in this chaos, but she could at least try to keep the Imperial scion; and as many others as possible; safe. Though when the Yamato came into the fray, she'd almost; but not quite; needed rescuing herself. Which would've been twice in a week that she'd nearly drowned.

Ran rushed toward the beached Yamato Maru to help anyone there. She would process what she saw afterwards.

The near-wreckage of Yamato Maru suddenly changed into... a five-story-high Rokugani-style castle of sand. Cackles, chortles and giggles started rocking it, reverberating all around and along the beach. From its highest levels small demonic faces started to pop up, only to disappear afterwards. Sand cannons would roll out from bay windows soon after and the beach and the rescuers would be rained by balls of slimy goo hitting them with ground-stealing impetus.

What?!

Suihime struggled to focus as suddenly they were all fired upon, but she still made sure to help all those she could.

What is going on? she thought to herself, thinking on anything she had read before as she worked.

Suihime would recognise it as an infestation by the creatures of Sakkaku, but waaay out of proportion, as if there was some sort of pent-up retribution being unleashed on the wide radius around the centre of burial celebrations, now defiled beyond human ken.

Anzai stood in horror as the creature rose from the sea. Instinct was to run, to find someone to fight. But that instinct wasn't there. It was rage. Hot, blinding rage. That such a thing should happen, when trying to say goodbye to Otsuka.

His hand went for his wakizashi, but he steadied himself. Diving for cover as the impacts of sand cannonballs were felt around him. Rising slowly, he would move to help any he could.

Otsuka would want him to do his duty.
