Bellena's hands pushed onto the tops of her knees as she labored to regulate her breathing up the final stretch of stairs leading up to the Temple of Sacred Light. She had located a map of the city which revealed this area to be the highest up and best location to do some research. A case carrying her telescope was strung from her shoulder as was a bag with writing materials and some data she had brought from Kameyama. Once she reached the top of the stairs she found a bench a few feet ahead on the trail and plopped herself down to recollect her breath.

She looked around to the temple a bit up the path and the scenery around her. Eventually her eyes went up to the sky where a shooting star passed directly over her head. A small smile crossed her lips as she watched it for that brief moment in time. Her eyes then eased shut as she lowered her head and began rubbing her legs a bit to work out some of the tiredness.

The long stairway didn't seem to particularly bother Suzume Rokuro as he ascended to the temple. It was important that he think about his own moral standing, given his public embarrassment in doubting it in others.

For a moment it seemed he didn't spot the woman, though he was merely choosing to give her the option of ignoring him, if she chose.

Hearing footsteps approach she opened her eyes and looked at the man approaching. She bowed her head as a greeting as he drew near.

Feeling it would be rude to ignore her, he bowed in return, hands tucked into his sleeves.

"Good evening, ..."

He realized he hadn't the faintest idea who, or what, she was. Certainly not the Rokugani he had been expecting.

"... -san. This one is Suzume Rokuro, I hope you have enjoyed Inari's blessing today."

She bowed again at his introduction, "I have been so blessed. It's a pleasure to meet you, I am Muhaki Berena. Coming for a bit of late-night worship?" She asked with a tilted head.

"You could say that."

He smiled.

"I sometimes forget to pay my respects when I visit a town, but I thought I ought to stop by, before the voyage."

"So you are heading out with the Explorers then?" She asked.

"I am."

He assumed he would be, at least. Unless some Seppun managed to arrange another erroneous accusation to stop him.

She nodded, "I see. You may not have many opportunities for some time to come to a place like this."

A nod.

"Do you plan to take part?"

It was the only reason he could imagine her being here now.

"It would almost seem being here would be more foreign for you to be here than out over the sea, if you don't mind my saying."

She chuckled. She was too tired to be too deceptive about what was obvious, "I do not plan to travel with the Explorers, no. I am here on clan business and need to return shortly."

She looked up to the sky as she lowered her case onto the ground and began to open it up, "But I don't want to miss an opportunity to get some detailed information on the stars from this part of the globe while I can."

..

"The stars?"

Rokuro sounded curious, genuinely so.

"What about them?"

"I study them. Track their locations across the sky, measure the variances in the moon's orbit, predict eclipses..." She said as she continued to open the pack, first pulling out some parchment tied neatly in a bundle.

"Fascinating."

He stepped a little closer, resting his left elbow on his katana, his right hand on his hip.

"Can you say why? I mean, it's interesting, it just seems a little... academic, no?"

"Is there something wrong with academic pursuits?" She asked with a smile.

"Well, no."

Rokuro laughed.

"I just don't meet many who are willing to pursue them for their own sake. It's rather refreshing."

He quirked his head, and added, "I don't suppose you would mind showing me how it's done?"

She nodded, "I would love to."

She then pulled a long cylindrical object from her case and a three legged contraption which she fatstened it to and then put it on the ground.

"Do you have any background in Divination or Astronomy Suzume-sama?"

"Neither, I confess."

He watched from a respectful distance.

"There are more things to learn, than time to learn them."

She nodded and smiled, "Just wanted to make sure I wasn't starting from the base if you knew. No one likes being talked down to when they know things."

She put the object squarely down. At one end there was a curved glass eye that pointed upwards and at the other there was a viewing port. "This is called a telescope. It uses shaped glass to magnify objects that are very far away. Using this you can get a glimpse of the objects in the sky and more accurately measure the distance between each flicker of light. Just as the view looking up at the top of a mountain differs from its eastern and western faces, so too the stars appear differently and at different times in different spots across the earth."

She looked down into the viewing port and fiddled with something near its end. "A great deal of cultures base their calendars off of the location of certain stars in the sky. Accurately calculating when things will happen has some uses as far as correcting mistakes that some governments have in place, as well as aiding in the navigation of ships across the ocean where there are no markers to help guide. It allows ships to move at full speed during both day and night, if one has a good concept of where they are."

She stopped fiddling and looked up at the Suzume, "Would you like to have a look? I've lined up an object which is thought to be a star by many... but is actually something quite different."

He listened in silence, nodding to show his understanding.

Rokuro took the offered device, peering through it thoughtfully. "What am I looking at?"
