"Hmm." Kenzo murmured, smiling. He did not elaborate.

He did, however, cheerfully join in with the leaf collection, gathering a few of the brightest ones for Utsusemi, and some of the more interesting ones for Ran.

A good amount of his attention, however, was spent surveying the treeline. His head tilted to the side, a curious expression, as he tried to listen to nearby sounds.

Sanjuro quietly pointed the leaves collectors to another specimen, with bright orange foliage, lined with pink shades.

"Oh... I have never seen such a colour on maples before," she turned over a leaf a few times, rather surprised by the unique appearance of bright orange lined with pink. Orange momiji weren't rare, but she had never seen ones lined with pink before.

A sample of this was preserved as well.

Kenzo glanced over, observing the leaves. "Very nice." He said. However, his expression still remained abstracted, his head tilted to the side.

His eyebrows suddenly went up, along with his hand a moment later. "There it is! Do you hear it?"

The faint echoing sound of something rapidly drumming against wood could be heard for just a moment. It repeated a seconds later, somewhere above and eastward of the party.

Silently tucking away the last sample of leaves, Utsu tilted her head to the side too as she listened for the sound.

"... Do you know what it is?" she said, her voice low so not to make too much noise.

Kenzo shot her a quick grin. "I believe that would be the woodpecker that Agasha Sanjuro-sama mentioned earlier." He spoke in the same low undertone, but excitement was evident in his voice. "It sounded like it came from that way. Perhaps we should take a look..." He started off immediately, placing his feet with care to make as little noise as possible.

Indeed, he did not have to go far at all, before he stopped, gesturing suddenly up into a nearby tree. "There, there!" He hissed, his excitement multiplied.

Sanjuro stood aside, watchful of the surroundings, letting them enthuse about natural phenomena undisturbed.

"I await further discussion with Agasha-sama with baited breath," Ran nodded affirmatively to Utsu, giving her a soft smile.

"Oh! Isn't that striking!" She was taken by the brightly coloured bird. She pulled out paper and charcoal, and began scribbling notes.

Utsu nodded to Ran, letting the conversation quiet down as they observed the bird.

She knelt down as she looked at it, trying to avoid make too much noise that might upset the little creature. The drumming-sound from its beak was most curious, and she wondered if it was trying to make a hole to nest in, or looking for food. "I have not seen a bird do that before," she murmured, looking at Kenzo, as he was the animal expert.

"Isn't it?" Still moving cautiously, Kenzo moved to Ran's side. His gaze went between the woodpecker and the notes Ran was taking.

The implied question from Utsusemi, as well as her glance, drew his attention, though. He gave her a nod. "Yes, interesting, isn't it? It's almost certainly looking for food; small insects just below the surface of the wood. The drumming may be useful for signalling, although that's not as well understood.

The woodpecker hopped up the tree a few inches, and rapidly pecked once again, the sound louder now with their proximity.

"... But the insects will surely hear the noise and go away?" she lowered her voice nearly to a whisper, her eyes on the bird.

Tsumugi would've loved to see this...

Kenzo shook his head. He leaned a little closer to ensure he might be heard, even as he pitched the volume of his voice to match hers.

"Not really." He whispered, smiling. "They usually eat ants, I believe, and those congregate in large enough numbers that it's easy to catch at least a few." He looked up at the woodpecker, still smiling. "Or so I understand it."

After a moment, he shifted back, looking at Ran's paper once more.

Kenzo's closer proximity did elicit a brighter expression for a brief moment, glancing at him with a small smile before looking back at the bird. She was more than happy to let Ran do her sketching for now.

And a part of her idly wondered what sort of drum could be used to replicate the sound the woodpecker was making.

She wasn't sketching so much as taking notes.

A scholar? ... It was in her blood, and her notes were detailed. Super detailed. Like, overly detailed. Almost boring in their complexity.

Kenzo watched with interest, looking at Ran's notes. Although not too closely; he knew how carefully scholars could guard the notes they took. Indeed, he did not typically show anyone his notebook.

"Ran-san, I would very much like to discuss your methods sometime. If you would be willing." He said quietly.

The woodpecker hopped once, twice, and then with a sudden flutter of wings, it was off. Kenzo sighed. "Well! That was fortunate!" He said, his voice returning to a more normal volume.

Utsusemi gazed after the bird after it took wing, feeling both envy and admiration of its flight.

As Kenzo spoke to Ran, she looked to Sanjuro, to see how he was faring.

She smiled at Kenzo, and blew on the excess charcoal, then tucked her papers away, though she twiddled the charcoal stick between two fingers.
"Of course, Mirumoto-sama," she agreed, though her gaze ticked from the bird as it took flight, to the Dragon Lady who joined them. Then back to Kenzo. "Nothing would please me more than talking about the natural world and how I view it."

Sanjuro had been collecting mushrooms into a cloth tied to his chest while remaining watchful, but Utsu's attention brought his gaze back to her, with a twitch of bushy eyebrows.

It was a little amusing how the others seemed to take to the trip compared to her; Kenzo and Ran enjoying the scholarly part, and Sanjuro finding the bounties of nature.

Taking a few steps closer, she could see the mushrooms he had found.

"... I have seen these before, I think."

"They are not uncommon. Tasty nonetheless. Something else for tempura." He said quietly, biting his lip as he lowered himself on one knee to expertly remove another batch of shrooms from beneath the fallen orange foliage.
