It had been a lovely evening. Festivities from impending nuptials followed by an after-party hosted by Muhaki Zazu's private estate, where entertainment had been brought in from his favorite local establishment. But this too came to an end, so it was under the clear light of Lord Moon that a beautiful woman with a painted face made her way through streets and alleys back to her house so she could finally rest after a long evening. Her furisode shimmered in the moonlight, silver threads glinting as she trekked back. Her tall wooden shoes rang out softly with every short step so that the hem of her clothing did not scrape against the ground, and each step echoed in the empty silence. Soon, soon she would be home..... but she thought she heard something. She stopped and her sound of her ringing steps ceased as well. Hearing nothing, she looked over her shoulder. First she smiled, then she screamed.

And all was silent once more.

Rokuro had been walking home after the party, sadly not drunk, when he heard a scream.

The direction of the scream was hard to tell this late, with the light from the lanterns dying low, but he made his best guess and hurried toward it, hand on his blade.

Sometimes people got over-exited, so it could be nothing.

Or it could be something.

He was a magistrate, he had a duty.

The Jade magistrate had made a quick stop home after the festivities and was actually on her way to the Dragon Pan for her patrol. Hearing a scream here instead was completely unexpected, and she made her way over to where it had come from as quickly as possible, already taking out the scroll she figured she was most likely to be using...

It was a bad day for the Ichiro. Ever since his meeting with that bitch, he had been getting a few sideways glances at him. Word travels quick around this damn place, and he was...about 85% sure he didn't have anything medically wrong with him thanks to him. Maybe.

I mean, if something was wrong, he'd have felt something right about now. Some sort of mental episode, something not working right. He was honor-bound to appear at the festivity, all the same, but he would not speak to anyone, just simply eat and drink. Which he surely did a lot of. Not enough to make him stumbling this evening, but it had gotten to the point where he had to break away from the main party and take a few breathes of fresh air.

I mean, seriously, are things not supposed to grow on you? Some sort of mar--

A sound came out from into the night, one not from the party. Quickly making a leap off his pedestal, he rushed to the noise's location in hopes that with whatever happened, it was not too late to help someone.

Zabieru felt like the King of the World. He was married to one of the jewels of the Imperial families and had been granted the captaincy of the Amateratsu's Grace - the flagship of the expedition -. Adamant in keeping this good wave rolling, he offered the liquid enthusiasm for his champion's festivities; casks of Txakoli and Naiara wine straight from Aberri and more traditional kokuto and amamori shochu certified that the patrons of the party would not spend their night with a dry throat.

He swirled the crimson liquid in his cup before downing it in one take. Damn, today was a good day to be Zabieru.

The Yoriki was not far behind. The idea had been to conduct patrols before anything could happen. But it was better late than never. She pulled out her scroll ad well and hurried over.

On the ground lay a young woman. Red paint circled her eyes, deeper red still were her lips. Her face was painted white, striking an eerie contrast to the pale, colorless skin. A spray of red ran from her neck and a thin rivulet oozed from the open wound slashed across her throat to pool on the ground below. She was dressed in a silvery-white furisode decorated with flowers, and the underlayer was a reddish-purple. A closed fan lay several inches away from her limp hand, and one hair-pin had fallen from her carefully coiffed hair.

She was quite dead.

The Ichiro was first on the scene.

And what a scene it was.

He knew little about medicine, but anyone could tell it was quick. She wouldn't have lasted long with a cut that deep on her throat.

"Such a waste." He looks her over, her face and makeup said it all on what she did, not touching the body to ensure that the guards would not get the wrong idea. Murder weapon not near the body, so that means it's still on the perp.

He continues to keep a eye on the scene in hopes someone would show up. Considering the late night festivities, it would make sense that he would not be the only person to hear her death wail nearby. Just have to hope that someone else gets here before whoever did this gets away.

Next came Hikari, scroll in hand; half-considering just blasting the guy next to the corpse until she recognized him. The person responsible probably wouldn't stick around, and probably wouldn't look like the Ichiro.

Although, it would be a good cover...

"Don't move," she said just to make sure, before surveying the surroundings.

The captain paced slowly towards the scene of the crime and sneered at the ghastly sight. "This will not do," he stated dryly as he took a sip from his cup. "What an absolute waste."

He rolls his eyes at her, knowing this situation would come about exactly from the moment he arrived first and does not move, per her orders.

"Ichiro Kajima. Not the murderer." He looks over at the drink who came in here, saying the same thing he said.

"Have not even touched the body yet."

The Sparrow arrived on the scene, and then paused.

It was too late. Always too late.

Taking a slow breath, he paced closer.

"Apologies for my bluntness, but did any of you see what happened?"

"I did not. I doubt any of us did." The priestess let out a small yawn. "Bad timing has been our speciality for the last few months." She gave her betrothed a small nod and took her place next to the Imperial's side. "I imagine Suzume-sama was patrolling for the same reasons as us. But what about the rest of you?"

In the short period of time, the slow drip of blood from the open wound slowed and ceased. Far faster than most bodies for those who have seen massive wounds before. And the body doesn't have the pale blue, either. It's far too colorless for a normal corpse.

"Well now," slowly she put her scroll away, "if you say so."

There were too many people around; but as her yoriki said, it was unlikely any of them were involved. Besides, there'd probably be blood on them... especially if her suspicions about the corpse and its unusual state were correct.

She kneeled down a little to get a closer look at the wounds.

Rokuro stepped closer.

"I'm a magistrate; please don't disturb anything. I'd like to look for any sign of what caused this."

His tone was firm but polite.

Not waiting for a reply, lest the trail grow even colder, he began to cast about for signs of the attacker, any trail to follow.

While the Suzume might not sound like he was causing offense, he was still stepping into a jurisdictional minefield.

"This is the jurisdiction of the Jade office, Suzume-san." She surveyed the body and surroundings still, as she spoke. "But your aid is welcome."

The wound itself looked like her throat had been sliced open, but the neat middle of the wound was surrounded by tearing to widen it.

Leading away from the body, there thin trail of stumbling and shuffling back towards the direction of the Pan.

Rokuro paused.

"This woman doesn't appear to have been killed by magic."

He didn't intend to simply walk away. "She was murdered, and if we want to get justice for her, then one of us should follow this trail, Seppun-san."

He took in her mons. "You are certain this is a matter of magic? Can you determine anything about the killer from the scene?"
