An exhausted Kenzo slumped into the entrance to the dumpling shop. The smell of fresh, good food was a powerful draw.

And yet, he stared blankly at it. The long trip, and the ravages of the storm had taken their toll on him. As well as the heavy exertions of that morning. Blearily, Kenzo rubbed at his face with, thankfully, freshly cleaned hands, willing the fog in his brain to clear.

Khenbish was in full kit, he’d spent the larger part of his morning providing escort to a load of good being transferred from the Eastern port to a ship docked in west. His armour bore a sigil of a ki-rin with a mane of flames stamped into the leather, and he carried a gleaming, well-cared for musket on a sling, hanging from his right shoulder. At his right hip was a scimitar, the curved blade long and slender.

He stomped heavily in the direction of the dumpling shop, hungry.

Tired though he was, Kenzo couldn't miss the imposing warrior approaching. He straightened, stepping out of the way.

On the other hand, it did bring him out of his reverie. Right. He was here to get food. Although he wasn't exactly sure how that worked. "Excuse me- oh, damn." Kenzo said, trailing off to a mutter as he addressed the strange warrior. "Right. Language. This may prove difficult." He gave the other man a grimace of apology.

Khenbish had offered a curt nod of acknowledgement to the foreigner, and then the man had spoken. The port was a swirl of languages, and not all of them he understood, so it came as no surprise that the Rokugani's first words were completely lost on the Moto.

When he focused his attention on Kenzo, his left eye seemed to stare, penetratingly, at the Rokugani. "New arrival?" Khenbish grunted, his strange accent a mismatch for the Merenaese language.

Kenzo shifted a little, made uncomfortable by the glare of that eye. And yet, Kenzo was a man of science, of reason. Magic was one thing, and undeniable, but superstition was another. Not that those things were always easy to distinguish.

"I'm sorry." Kenzo said. "I don't understand. I only speak rokugani." He brightened just a little. "And a little Yobanjin." He glanced at the man, looking for understanding, even in that strange eye of his.

Khenbish grunted at what he supposed was an apology, judging by the tone, the expression, and the number of people who had just about tripped over backwards while muttering in a similar manner when they first caught sight of his scarred countenance and glaring eye.

"Yobanjin, yes," Khenbish agreed, apparently unmoved by the finding of a common tongue.

"Oh, well, that's fortunate." Kenzo paused for a moment, frowning, but his fatigued mind couldn't quite grasp just how fortunate.

"Ah, I was just wondering, do you suppose this shop accepts foreign currency?" He asked.
"It is silver, even if it's not the correct coinage, I'd imagine."

"Your coin will be fine, whatever you've got," Khenbish answered. As if by way of demonstration, he approached the flustered-looking girl who was taking customer orders, "the goat alzalabia, and beer." He paid, and shuffled to one side, looking around for somewhere to sit.

"Oh, good." Kenzo followed the scarred man into the shop.

"Dumplings, any sort. Oh, damn." The latter said in response to the blank look and helpless shrug from the girl. "Of course." He muttered. "Ummm..." With a wry smile, he turned back to Khen. "My apologies for troubling you further. But it seems Yobanjin isn't spoken here. Except by you." Another curious glance, this time sharper. "Would you assist me in ordering?"

Perhaps it was just the nature of that left eye, but Khenbish's expression seemed cold, "very well," and, to the girl's apparent discomfort, he moved back towards the counter. To Kenzo, "do you know what you want?"

"Dumplings. Something simple." Kenzo sighed. "It's been rather a long day, already.
On the end of a long month."

Kenzo cleared his throat, remembering himself. "Thank you, ah... He cleared his throat again. "Mirumoto Kenzo, at your service."

The Rokugani was likely in for a shock, as Khenbish ordered a serve of the same spiced, meat-filled dumplings that he had ordered for himself. This time, he spotted an open table, pointing Kenzo towards it, "Moto Khenbish," was all he offered in return for the introduction.

Nodding gratefully, Kenzo moved to the indicated table. He frowned at it a moment before sitting.

He waited for Khen to be seated himself before speaking up again. "May I ask how you come to speak Yobanjin,
ah, Moto-san? And better than me, unless I'm mistaken."
Kenzo's eyebrows went up. "Yobanjin is a language spoken by people not far from my homeland, which is a great distance from here."

"Just Khenbish," the older man grunted as he sat, settling his weapons about him as he did so. He betrayed no confusion over Kenzo's words, despite how oddly they struck him. Khenbish was also a long way from home, and it made him wonder where, exactly, this foreigner had come from, if not from the vast, rolling deserts of "far away".

"My kin are two-people," his grasp of the language wasn't perfect, but he brought up his hands, as if supporting something large in each, and gestured bringing them together. Indicating each hand in turn, "one people speak Mekhem, one people speak Yobanjin. Many learn both."

"Khenbesh." Kenzo echoed, frowning. It would take some getting used to, but he would adapt. Just as he was adapting to being seated while wearing two swords.

"Very interesting." Kenzo said. "Hmm. I'm not sure if I should call my people one, or many. Many under one. We do all speak the same language, so using that metric..." He shrugged.

"May I ask what your people are called?" He asked, his tone polite. Mine, I suppose you would say, are Rokugani."

"I am Tarkanate, my brethren are the Unicorn. When I was still a boy, we joined. We will be one Clan again, as Shinjo promised." He spoke the Kami's name with a soft reverence, but the mood was immediately lost as the serving woman approached and placed two mugs of beer on the table between Khenbish and Kenzo, before retreating just as quickly. The Moto gratefully reached for his drink and took a swig.

Most of those words were entirely lost on Kenzo, including 'Unicorn', but 'Shinjo' was not. "Shinjo? Shinjo is known by my people as well. She was one of the Great Kami who was present at the founding of the Empire." He gave Khen a sharp look. "Unless... perhaps it is only the name that is the same?"

Kenzo frowned curiously at the mugs placed between them. His eyes flickered to the Moto, mirroring his gesture, grimacing at the unfamiliar taste.

Khenbish narrowed his eyes slightly, "I know not of your 'Empire'. The compassionate goddess Shinjo sacrificed herself for her kin and followers. Her descendants," he touched the sigil on his chest, "lead the Unicorn to this day."

"Interesting..." Kenzo said, frowning thoughtfully. He was silent for a few moments.

He sighed. "Unfortunately, I think this raises more questions than it answers. In Rokugan, Shinjo was the Great Kami who led the Ki-rin to see what lay outside of the Empire." He sighed again. "I have not made an extensive study of theology. I cannot say of these two things are the same. He spread his hands.

"Well." Kenzo said, grimacing as he took another drink of the alcoholic beverage. "Would you tell me more of your kin? Is this where they live?" He gestured around.

"Ki-rin, yes, Unicorn," and once more Khenbish tapped the sigil of the twin-horned beast. "It's not my place to know the Goddess Shinjo's actions. I know only that she sacrificed herself but promised to return, when she was needed most."

They were interrupted once more by the girl, delivering the ordered dumplings, to which Khenbish immediately tucked into, eating with his slender fingers. Washing down the first few bites with his beer, "We are from the Burning Sands, baked by the vicious gaze of our Lady Sun. Much, much east of this place."
