Premise

For some reason the kumo didn't kill but captured most of the defeated combatants from the last night's battle, and abducted them into the underworld of the island, a complex network of volcanic caves crisscrossing the plateau stretching from the northern rims of Mount Kappa to the perilous northern shores. The chase over some of the spiders have led the rescue teams mandated by Yajinden to the many entrances to the system of caverns at the Vapid Gorges. The caverns reek of otherworldly rot, secretions and carcasses of beasts run foul. For the viability of the effort, no-one is allowed to enter alone...

Mechanics

  • Form a team of two to enter the event. All rolls in the event can be Cooperative rolls. If you have a viable Servant advantage, you can go in with them as your second. If you don't but you want one or yours doesn't have the right skill, you can purchase a local prior to the event as per the rules for the day, with 3xp discount. The Skill at 3 is negotiable and can be in direct correspondence with the rolls for the event below (spelunkers, guides, budoka, guano miners, herbalists, etc.)
  • In this event, you gather Spider Underworld Chasing Knacks (SUCKs). Each successful roll yields 1 SUCK, plus 1 for every 2 Raises. Failure means 0 SUCKs, -1 for each failed Called Raise. For each 5 SUCKs your team gathers you discover one survivor in a spider cocoon in a near-death condition. Excess SUCKs can be passed on another team upon completion of the event for a given team.
  • Each discovered survivor is worth 10 VIP upon return, double that if he or she receives first aid (see Rolls).
  • All TNs in the event are 25.
  • Rolling under by 10 or more of the final TN generates Perilous Encounter. Rolling over by 10 or more of the final TN generates a Fortuitous Encounter. There can be no more than two encounters per team, and the second can begin only after the completion of the first. They will be resolved in separate threads in this forum and can potentially involve combat, deadly combat. Those will be heavily ghosted as the event should resolve quickly, so if you go into the event, prepare ghosting instructions just in case. Encounters can be fled from with immediate effect, but further rolls on the event are cancelled and all gathered SUCKs discarded. PCs and named NPCs lost to spiders during the battle or due to other circumstances can be saved this way; and encounters involving them will be given priority.
  • The number of rolls you can do in the event is determined by the summarised Earth Rings of the team. Servants are considered Earth 2. Rolls can be repeated.
  • Since before last downtime each of you possesses a 1.0 Jade capacity over whatever jade you have on your own. Each roll in the event consumes 0.1 Jade capacity. More can be consumed during the encounters. Jade is unavailable for purchase on the island. Servants are considered cover in their anti-Taint needs by your Jade, but if you run out, so do they.
  • Fire Spells don't suffer from kami scarcity here. Spells of other elements do.

Rolls

  • Go Deep. You descend into the tunnels as deep as you can. Perception/Hunting (Any), Strength/Athletics (Climbing), Intelligence/Craft: Mining or Willpower/Lore: Nature (Earth). Absolute Direction grants a FR. On failure, you lose 1 rolling slot from the pool.
  • Enter with Fire. Mark your way forward and scare off the dark things by fire, even by throwing flammable guano bundles. Intelligence/Firearms (Any) or Craft: Explosives, Agility/Jiujutsu (Improvised Weapons), Reflexes/Kyujutsu (Any), Spellcasting a Fire Spell. On failure, you burn yourself: 2k2 exploding damage.
  • Follow the Oozing. You scout the marks of the spiders' passing. Perception/Investigation (Notice or Search), Intelligence/Lore: Shadowlands or Awareness/Animal Handling. On failure, you step into a Tainted goo puddle: lose 0.3 Jade capacity.
  • Thrust Hard. You cut through abundant spider webs, seeking hidden cocoons. Agility or Strength/Weapon Skill with a melee weapon. On failure, you lose your weapon for good.
  • Please Be Gentle. This can be attempted after every 5 SUCKs. You can try to perform first aid on the cocooned survivor you find. You don't need medicine kit for this. Intelligence/Medicine (Any). It counts only if at least 5 Wounds get healed. On failure, you kill the survivor. Lose 5 SUCKs, Honour for being an accomplice to a minor crime, and for lying to bolster your reputation if you don't accept a drop of Glory by 0.5.

It was a bit odd, being paired with a Dragon, though Agasha Utsusemi wasn't the worst of them. She didn't talk to much like Kenzo, and wasn't a Gaijin loving fool like her brother-in-law. At least as far as he knew, His bow was in hand as he lead the way through the caves, using flaming arrows to clear their path for them. Things were going fairly well as they moved forward, and with luck they might be able to find one or more people.

Somehow that morning when pairs were being selected to go and find people in the Spider infested caves Bellena volunteered to help despite personal misgivings related to the fact there were giant spiders inside. She had seen Kenzo work on the snake, and so of all the people to be partnered with she felt most comfortable with him.

The duo started off with an exciting and effective regiment of gunpowder to work their way into the caves.

Roll 1: 2 SUCKs and Fortuitous Encounter
Roll 2: 2 SUCKs
Roll 3: 2 SUCKs
Roll 4: 2 SUCKs and Fortuitous Encounter #2

They had found one person and a couple of things happened when they took a break...

And whatever her personal feelings on Yasuhiro were, she had no doubts about his honour or his competence. So dressed in sensible clothing, carrying her naginata and satchel with her medicine kit and a few secured doses of poluvora, Utsusemi followed the Matsu bushi's directions...

For all the time he'd now been on the island, he had had little interaction with any Unicorn. He had so many questions, but there were far more important matters at hand.

Ruqqayah hadn't met the Imperial she was paired with now, but something about his appearance looked familiar. Well, it wasn't too important at the moment. Maybe she could talk to him later. "Thank you, Miya-san," she replied, smiling despite the creepy environment. He seemed nice. Maybe they could talk later.

Once they had rescued the magistrate, Kenzo tried to lead the way to find additional people. But although they managed to explore a bit more of the cave, no one else was found.

Keiji and Susumu delved deeply into the caves. "This way!" the Lion declared confidently, raising a small lantern to light the way down a rocky corridor that descended at a steep incline.

But as Keiji climbed downwards one of the rocks turned beneath his feet, causing him to slip and fall...

Go Deep with 1 FR to lower TN, Athletics 10 missed TN20 by 10, awk. I think I also lose the next roll.

The Mantis restrained a sigh when the Lion fell down the chasm. It was an accident after all but the weight on his shoulder to find his first mate and Ringo made him more irritable.

''Are you allright?'' he asked his fellow captain when he reached solid ground, his call was answered by numerous scuttling sounds in the darkness beyond

He drew his pistol and smirked with glee when the flash and the bang scared the swarm away.
