Kenzo shot her a wry smile. "You know, I was rather hoping that you would provide another fascinating lesson. I suppose it's unfair to ask that you have all the answers."

He chewed his lip for a few moments. "I suppose this doesn't mean there's no point in looking. It just means that we should find a variety of sites, and that location has more concerns than a balance between proximity and geological suitability."

Kenzo tensed, suddenly (possibly) alert.

On an instinct Kenzo hopped back as a giant snake fell from the tree on Bellena.

Quick niten cuts on the swirling boa made deep gushes but apparently didn't kill the creature's determination.

[27 damage to snake; -1]

Surprised, Bellena collapsed on the ground under the weight of the green boa as it wrapped around her.

EA6. Collapse to prone?: 2d10 14 (Prone)

Her will to fight for her life kicked in, but not soon enough...

Kenzo attacked fiercely, trying to free his friend from the snake that was trying to crush her. His katana slashed back and forth, again and again, aimed precisely for the snake's flesh.

Measured cuts portioned the snake with chef's precision; the creature fell off dead, in parts.

Kenzo still held his katana firmly gripped in his right hand, his knuckles white. After a quick glance around to make sure nothing else was about to strike, he knelt by Berena.

"Are you okay?" He asked urgently. With his left hand, he worked to free her from the snake's corpse, untangling her.

Bellena was caught by surprise, but not much else befell her because of Kenzo’s quick action. She was on her knees coughing shortly after the snake died. She nodded first to Kenzo’s question and then replied as soon as she could control the coughing, “Yes, thank you my friend. Just a bit spooked.”

Kenzo carefully cleaned and sheathed his sword before rising. He offered Berena a hand up.

"Well, that was rather sudden, wasn't it? Perhaps it's time to be getting back." He looked cautiously around. After a few moments, he spoke again. "Do you think we can manage to carry the snake back?"

She looked up at him with a look that said a thousand words, "Carry the snake back?!"

Kenzo nodded earnestly. "Look at it! Isn't it magnificent? What a specimen! It's unfortunate that we had to kill it." He sobered a little bit. "But your safety was paramount, of course."

He was silent for a few moments before continuing on in a rush. "But now that you're safe, and it's dead, well... a proper study of it really should be done. If we can. I don't think it's actually that heavy..." He looked at her beseechingly.

[On earlier rolls.]

Bellena could clearly identify Mount Kappa as an extinct volcano; some stone forms, once someone mentally abstracted vegetation, clearly pointed to old lava valleys and smaller vents. One of those valleys would likely be an easiest path to the top, though the vegetation was making it prohibitive to advance without better preparedness. Erosion of soil pointed to more rocky passage; a mixed blessing - less vegetation, sharper ascent. But is where Kenzo could come in with his expertise, pointing to platlife that would help rather than impede progress because its roots were digging deep into the rock. All in all, on a better organised expedition hey just might find a way to the top.

Bellena had a look of surprise and consternation on her face as she looked around for someone who might not be crazy to rely on. After collecting herself and closing her gaping mouth she looked up at Kenzo, "I'm not touching that thing... You can do what you want with it..."

Kenzo's lips twisted. "Ah, but you've already touched it. Maybe it saw us dancing, and wanted a turn, eh?" It wouldn't be the first time his sense of humor had gotten him in trouble.

He sighed. "Well... will you help me rig something up with my rope? Some sort of sling? You won't have to touch it." He assured her as he drew forth the rope from his bag. "But for someone in my studies, this really is quite the opportunity. I'm sure you understand."

She looked at him incredulously, "I do not understand... not in the least."

She then picked up her stuff and began walking back down the path they had come.

A look of consternation on his earnest features, Kenzo looked back and forth between the dead snake and Berena. Finally, he sighed. "Damn, damn." He muttered under his breath. But he didn't think he could manage the snake by himself, and the jungle was clearly too dangerous for either of them to be alone.

With a faintly regretful sigh, he turned, jogging until he caught up with Berena. There would be other days, and other snakes...
