Ruqqayah hadn't heard from Suihime in the couple of days since they last talked, but, much to her shame, that wasn't something that was going to stop her from plumbing the mysteries of the former brewery. The building had been nagging at her brain the last few days, reminding her of the unknowns it still held. When you got down to it, it was better to remove the heart below the floorboards, right? For everyone's protection. Something like that was dangerous left on it's own. And anyway... knowing more... it was all for Bashiri. He should see the light of day again.

Seeing Wataru's peaceful face as he tried to pass on reminded her of what was important. She had gotten so distracted lately.

So she entered the house with tools at hand, ready for what she had to do.

Suihime must have moved to a nicer place, or just wasn't home. Still, the work to tear apart the floor would take the effort of a construction team, not one small woman... unless the woman played it smart. Perhaps the hieroglyphs held instruction?

The brewery was cool, for now.

Ruqqayah bit her lip, looking at the heiroglyphs more closely, following them in sequence and trying to get a better understanding of them and how they related to the brewery.

Ruqqayah knew a lot of languages, but she was never much good with the details of linguistics. Yet still, she dredged up the knowledge from when she first learned the language and it managed to click.

Quote:
It was an ancient story of Pharaoh Harmonthep and his vizier Hephnatti. Hephnatti was a most skill administrator of the Empire, originating from the Hanif tribes of the west, but he had one weakness - he fell in love with Harmonthep's only daughter Ashayt, and they were meeting without Pharaoh's consent. When Harmonthep learned of the defiance Ashayt was already pregnant with Hephnatti's child. The Pharaoh called the High Priestess Herit to devise a punishment in a way that would discard neither his daughter nor his vizier. Studying the Book of the Dead, Herit came up with the most terrible solution.

Ashayt was allowed to give birth, but her beautiful son was taken from her and brought to the sacrificial chamber where Hephnatti was held. Ceremony of the Hidden Heart was performed on the vizier, and with it all feelings to Ashayt were expunged, leaving only the loyalty to the Pharaoh. For his immortal life, however, a cruel death of his newborn son was the price, and of the innocent child's essence the sustaining link between the heart put in the iron box and the man's body was weaved as only blood of the vizier's blood could pay it. Harmonthep kept the heart and with his control of Hephnatti he conquered the hill tribes to the west which had long defied his father.

As Ashayt had already been defiled, Harmonthep did not marry her to the Satrap of Qaharaba, a powerful city-state to the southwest, but took her for himself, starting his incestous progeny of which each inherited the part of the scattered and tormented soul of Ashayt's firstborn. One would become Pharaoh Ekhnammon, one would not live to the adult age and one would be the pupil of Hephnatti, by the name Ekhmenes.

In Ekhmenes, the vengeance for Hephnatti's only son would grow and expand. After Harmonthep's death he remained loyal to his brother Ekhnammon, but he killed Herit and spiked her head on his chariot, parading it through the Eye of the Desert. But his resentment grew also against Hephnatti his master, and to replace him he stole his heart from his brother and ordered him to kill himself. Hephnatti left the Eye of the Desert to seek the means of his own death, finding that immortality was a curse more terrible than imagined. None of the ways to commit suicide worked for him, and while his flesh was scratched from his bones, his lich-form remained.

Ekhnammon found out about his younger brother's theft and imprisoned him, torturing him to learn where he had hidden Hephnatti's heart, but he wouldn't tell. Ekhmenes turned blind and leprous in his brother's prison and when his life was nothing but forfeit, Hephnatti rescued him to tell him he had found the way to kill himself at an ancient city of Laramun - his heart had to be destroyed in a Ritual of Devouring. His mortality would return to him only if the essence binding him to the heart was joined again in another body. Ekhemenes' soul had long crumbled and he cared not for his life or mundane glory anymore save for ending the torment. He ordered Hephnatti to kill Ekhnammon and claim his lungs, to defile the grave of his deceased and mummified sister Eutete and bring the chopped vase with her entrails, and to bring to him a maiden from among a Hanif. Hephnatti did his three works. Ekhmenes conducted the dark ritual, joining in himself the remaining parts of the soul of Ashayt's firstborn, culminating in opening the box and eating Hephnatti's heart, unmaking the lich vizier. His wretched body could not sustain the weight of a full soul, however, and would collapse, but not before impregnating the Hanif maiden who then fled from the capital back to her family in the west.

The Day of Wrath would devastate the land, and the new dynasty would emerge in Eye of the Desert once the Senpet remnants would regather in a drastically changed world. The posthumous child of Ekhmenes would be forgotten, but it would be born and receive the name of Ashayt's firstborn, Chephren.

Ruqqayah could not think clearly. Judging by the Sun, a few hours passed. She was shuddering from her own sweat now coating her body in a frozen layer as the temperature must have changed several times. It couldn't be the end of it, as it gave no clear answer whose heart was under the floor. There must be more to it, beneath, there must be!

But she had names. And she had places across the brewery with these names. Maybe one of them hid the entrance.

The story brought forth so many conflicted emotions - eagerness to find the path down, feeling ill at the tale of incest and inbreeding that the story presented, fear for the child that lay safe in her belly for now, a deeper fear at what she might have to sacrifice to achieve her aims. Bashiri... if one had to sacrifice the blood of one's blood to make someone immortal... would a similar sacrifice of close blood be required to return his soul?

Ruqqayah shook her head, stretching to try and get rid of the frozen sweat and the thoughts that plagued her, shivering as she did so. She wondered vaguely if she would have the chance to get a bath before she was supposed to meet with Kenzo? Still, finding the way down was the most important. The rest... she would have to deal with it when it happened.

She moved to begin checking around each name.

[Ruqqayah is Fatigued.]

The discomfort and strain on her body was slowly becoming obvious. Still, she managed to determine that the name of Eutete, mentioned only once, was on the same level above the first floor as those of Hephnatti, Ekhnammon and Ekhmenes, at four opposite walls.

She could feel a near physical weight on her body as she kept working, carefully lining herself up with each of the names to figure out where they indicated.

She could not figure it out without some calculations... just walking or even creasing the floor with carpenter tools wasn't bringing good results.

By some geometric calculations her brother had insisted she must know how to do Ruqqayah was able to determine that the lines between four names criss-crossed directly... on the barley malt vat mounted on the horizontal beam that might or might not be hollow.

The memory of her brother combined with the exhaustion brought her mood down into the doldrums a bit. But it couldn't stop her. Instead, she needed to figure out how to get into the vat. She circled it first to see if there was anything, then going up to see if there was an overhead route if there wasn't.

The vat was roughly of shape and size that could fit a human form in. It could be broken by some reverse carpentering most likely...

There was a symbol on it however. A hieroglyph meaning life after life.

Her hand was halfway up before she paused. "Life after life". That wasn't immortality, that was... maybe something not worth risking. Well, everything was worth it, but... Maybe better to see if she can get someone else down here as well. Hopefully there'd be enough time...

With that, she trudged out of the "brewery".

The guardian ghul in the vat stirred but did not awaken from its magical slumber.
