Money... by the kami the explorers waste little time in making you feel sympathy for the Tortoise...

She put these thoughts aside. "The adaptability required to explore requires more than merely having sailors aboard."

''Not mere sailors, no, but sailors nonetheless'' he replied with a chuckle

''The voyage may last months...will, say, entertainment be your only contribution? While the men play the winds, you will dance? While they scrub the decks, you will dance? While we fish our dinner, your will dance? Dancing for weeks on end might prove to be tedious for everyone.''

"You see only the journey while the Empire is asking 'what is the destination worth the money?' if there are no people to handle that this will be your ships last journey," she said growing weary of all this crowing from these potential captains. They clearly had no sway with the recruiters or else they'd never have this problem.

A soft laugh.

"And do Mantis Samurai leave their Dojo untended, their homes unkept? Do you think us so incapable that we cannot sweep or clean?"

The only reaction the captain had to the crane was a disbelieving glance and a smirk before turning his attention to the Sparrow

''You seem ready to do tasks that are not usually done by samurai...that is good.'' he grinned

''It is just that many expect to survive the trip with a perfect pedicure, or so they seem.''

Rokuro smirked, though his thoughts remained locked behind the mask of his eyes.

"Perhaps some do, but I'm certain Kakita-san here has done her share of cleaning dojo floors after lessons, and she makes a fair point, the Empire cares very much about the destination, so some who travel along will doubtless only prove their talents when they reach land again."

''If'' the Mantis simply said

She shrugged, "If you have so little confidence in you own skills and you ships you should go see Hantei Jama-sama," the Crane shrugged.

''Unlike you, Kakita-san, I know what I am talking about.''

I hope I will not have to babysit this one

''But I wonder, why is it you wish to engage inthe first voyage?''

"I am here to do what I must. Do minor clan samurai have liberty of chasing wishes?" she asked curiously.

Susumu restrained himself not to burst out laughing but became dreadfully serious

''If that is all then I am afraid you have no business on any of theses ships.'' his voice was hard but not agressive ''What we will begin is too important for half-assed sentiments''

Rokuro tucked his hands in his sleeves, expression still bland. "Then what is your resolve, Gusai-san? That you condescend so quickly?"

''I believe in Jama-no-Kimi's ambition to bring Rokugan to its rightful place in the world, Suzume-sama'' he replies at first, then continues

''I wish to see the lands beyond the horizon and the people that inhabit them, I wish for the Emerald Empire to enjoy the taste of a thousand islands and the sight of a thousand skies.''

He raised a finger

''But more importantly...I wish to be tested. I wish to be challenged by new ideas, learn from them and grow better for it. I want us to prove ourselves worthy of being the very first samurai sent to the edge of the world.''

"Yet you claim duty a shallow motivation."

He arched one eyebrow. "It seems ambition holds a higher standing in your eyes."

"We shall see about this," she place her hand on her sword hilt, "I challenge you for insulting my duty and the competency of the Imperial organizers of this expedition you think you run."

She nodded her head to the Sparrow, "Suzume-sama, as you have suffered similar grievances would you care to join me on my trip to the magistrate to seek appropriate redress?"

''What clan samurai is not beholden to duty, Suzume-sama? Aren't we all?'' he scratched his chin

''We are embarking on something historical and should be proactive in our duties to the Empire and Jama-no-Kimi. I cannot help but think that being content with the bare minimum in our service is missing the mark.''

He turned to the Crane who just challenged him, and rested his left hand on his Kama

''If so you wish Kakita-san, I have a good feeling you will win the duel''

With a faint sigh, he glanced between the two.

"If you wish to begin a feud, Kakita-san, I will not stop you. Yet it is as the teacher says 'A man whose sword is always drawn is never approached. He has no allies. Yet a man who never draws his sword will find it rusting in its sheath. Seek balance in all things.'"

Scratching his chin thoughtfully, he added, "He also says 'Wisdom can be found in many places, but you must always begin at home.'" With a small shrug, he added, "It would be foolish to think all the answers lie over the horizon."

"The legal case here is simple enough, a duel to first blood could be permitted to settle the estimation Gusai-san has made of our motivation. While I am not in my jurisdiction here, I can serve as witness after you notify the local magistrate." Opening his fan, he ran one finger along the edge of the fabric, allowing his words to carry what weight they might.

"Thank you Suzume-sama," she gave a bow and rising shot a look at the Mantis, "Would you spare us all the formality and rather offer an apology now then?"

Susumu laughed then. It was not mocking but rather joyful...not something expected from someone having just being challenged.

''Don't judge the horizon before having met it, Suzume-sama'' he gave the Sparrow a wink ''But you are right, of course''

He then fully turned to the Kakita

''Before I chose, could I ask a few more questions?''

Her demeanor shifted from a measure of openness to a deathly glare with her hand firmly resting on her blade. "Is that how the Mantis apologize? Well, if it is I assume your clan has never had a courtier last a winter. This slight too shall be remembered on the dueling field."

She took two steps back without breaking her gaze or moving her hand not trusting this uncivilized honourless wretch not to attack her in the street. "To the magistrate's then," she turned and headed off.
