The old man yelped as the hand of soil and stone curled around one leg and seized him. He spun around, nearly toppling over, and began stamping on the hand which weighed down his foot and slowed his escape. In frustration, he tried kicking it - eliciting a pained howl.

"Such a pain," the yoriki grumbled. She hurried over to the impeded man and gave him a well-aimed slap to the face. "It could be much worse for you. Stop resisting."

"Resisting?" he screeched indignantly, "You tried to burn me alive! And then you... did... this!"

He punctuated his second statement by winding up his leg again and, thinking better of it, banged his earth-coated leg against the ground with predictably futile results.

Putting her scroll away, Hikari casually came strolling toward the two.

"Now now, let's not get violent, Yogo-san. But she's right, stop resisting."

"I'm not resisting!" he protested, "How can I resist someone who tries to roast me alive?"

This time, rather than continue to beat the stone weighing him down, he opted to scuttle backwards as fast as he could drag himself.

"If I wanted you to burn alive, I could have done so easily." The Yogo readied her hand again but held herself back at the Magistrate's order. She gave the Imperial a small nod and took a step backward. "You may not be in league with our hunted foe but you are still violating the law."

"Ah, but you tried! You did the thing with the fire! Just because it didn't hurt me doesn't mean you didn't try!" he mewled, continuing to crawl backwards from the Yogo.

"That was just a magical means to detect spiritual corruption," she said with a handwave. "Now then, we can not allow someone to take advantage of fear and despair by selling people false hope. I *had* been considering simply confiscating your goods and leting you off with just a warning. But your behavior is making me disinclined to do so. Unless you can make a compelling case for us to bring you on as a useful informant in this and future cases, I'm afraid we may be forced to prosecute to the fullest extent of the law."

"My behavior!?" he asked incredulously, "I took you here, I shared all I know, and she tries to set me on fire? What was I supposed to do?!"

"I can not help you if you insist on arguing with me."

"I'm not arguing!" he cried with frustration, flopping against the ground while panting tiredly.

She sighed, as he argued about how he was not arguing.

"Yogo-san, how would you see us proceed?"

The woman looked down at the man and then back to Hikari. "To be honest, I wish I had killed him before I saw this display." She crossed her arms and sighed. "Now I am unsure of what to think."

The stone constricting around the old man's leg crumbled to dust, but he continued to cower rather than flee again.

She sighed. "Well, since he hasn't offered us any alternatives, take him back to the office I suppose. And dig up some lawbooks to see what the exact form of his punishment should be."

"Alternatives? Letting me go would be alternatives," he offered, "I'm not a bad person, and I don't hurt people. If you don't want me to sell those talismans anymore I won't."

"I already offered you the alternative, but you chose to reject it."

"You said you'd normally forgive what I'd done but that I'd lied to you and lives were on the line.... What lies? And I can tell you whatever I hear but I can't tell you what I don't know. What alternatives have you offered me Seppun-sama, honestly? And after your yoriki attacked me for no reason?" he answered resentfully.

"Live are on the line, and yet all she can do is attack me? And you'll waste your time harassing an old beggar?"

"I had my suspicions." She looked to her superior. "I had to be sure you were not playing the bumbling fool to lead our investigation astray. Now I am certain that is not the case."

"You don't have a better way of checking rather than to just attack me?" he retorted incredulously.
