The ceremony would be as grand as the scope of the island and the short notice for preparation would allow, but no expense had been spared to compensate. The shugenja present on the island would concelebrate it; they were preparing the holy grounds as the witnesses were gathering. The Tortoise Champion and his chosen betrothed were yet to show themselves, now separate, in their respective places of prayer...

In a quiet cave nearby Bellena finished the ritual observances to the Lady Sadahako, wishing in her heart that the woman would accept her as a suitable spouse for her own son.

Following the ritual prayers, Bellena found a moment of peace and reflection as she waited for the priest to come get her for the ceremony. In this moment, still on her knees, she closed her eyes and sought the guidance of one more supernatural woman... one who had always been close to her heart.

By the time the bell chimes, you will have thrice disowned me.

It was not a voice, but a thought given the shape of words. Yet somehow Bellena knew that while the words carried no condemnation, they were sad.

I will never truly disown you.

Bellena’s conscious mind replied.

The words did not reappear, but Bellena registered a splash. Looking down, she saw her rosary she had not pulled out for prayers lying in a muddy puddle that gathered below a dripping stalactite. It must have slipped from her robes, the white robes of death to former life. The dirt should have stained them with the splash, but somehow they remained pristine. The cross on the rosary, however, was caked with mud.

She heard steps approaching.

Bellena reached down to pick up the rosary and gently rubbed the dirt off in the water, trying to avoid getting her dress dirty. She would attempt to clean it and put it away inside her obi before the footsteps arrived...

And yet she would not manage to do it; Asahina Chisagawa would find her with the rosary in hand.

"Muhaki-san, why are you holding this heretical item in your hands when you are meant to be praying to Sadahako-kami?"

He asked with deep concern.

"You realise you cannot be wedded to a Rokugani lord in the Faith of the Kami and Fortunes if you do not leave your old ways behind. I will forget about it if you finally renounce them by putting this thing away, before it stains your wedding robes. Lord Saionji is waiting."

Bellena looked down at the object in her hand. Her father had given it to her before she left as a child. For years it had been what had kept her close as a visual reminder of her faith. It’s edges were rounded and smooth from the oils in her hands from over the years. It was only a thing, but a part of her identity as well.

It’s only a thing... My faith isn’t in objects...

She opened her hand and watched the cross fall to the stone floor. It seemed to fall slowly and with greater weight than the item possessed. Standing she turned to face the priest and nodded, “I am ready.”

Chisagawa nodded, and led her out into the courtyard adjacent to the garden with the turtle pond. Guests were already gathered, and turning their faces toward her. Faces that mostly were nothing like where she had been born, hardly like where she had grown up. They felt like a... crowd.

But then she saw him, dressed in bunkan sokutai corresponding with his high court rank, kanmuri atop his head, his wild hair gathered into a proper knot. But the eyes and the smile were like always, joyfully beckoning...

[A good moment for guests to pop in.]

Extravagantly dressed, Utsusemi stilled paled next to the finery of the bride as she approached Bellena's side, offering her friend an encouraging smile. She had been more than happy to help the bride with the cumbersome wedding kimono, and she was on hand to assist Bellena with any other issues that might arise.

"You look wonderful," she said in a hushed, but delighted tone, bowing deeply to the bride.

Kenzo was there, amongst the crowd. Dressed in his finest kimono, embroidered with gold in a water pattern, he was impeccably turned out.

He had his fan, and could have concealed his expression, but why? Kenzo beamed at the happy couple, openly happy for them.

Ruqqayah was there, dressed in her finest clothing as she had been for the ball, smiling and watching from her own position near the front of the crowd.

Edogawa waited quietly. He looked around, studying the temple and admiring the craftsmanship.

No one would have expected a Mantis to be here and yet he was. Dressed in his exquisite kimono he tried not to get much attention.

Ran was there, in an extravagant kimono, brilliant Tortoise colours blazing. Her greying brown hair done up with tendrils around her freckled face.

Little grandfather Ichigo in her hands, his colours unnatural, those of the nightsky and stars.

The Someisa daimyo wore a smile, happy for her liege and even happier for her friend.

Bellena walked down the path towards her beloved. The people and faces in her peripheral vision filled her heart with warmth. She had been told a bride was expected not to acknowledge the guests as she walked by them, but in her heart she was grateful for each person there. Her eyes were fixed on her noble husband-to-be. His clothes matched the noble roots she now knew he had deep within him, but it was the man he was that was reflected in those eyes that she was most pleased to see. Her own eyes looked up to his and locked on to him with a glint in her eye.

She walked up the last few steps to be at his side, a slight smirk emerged on the side of her mouth... only visible at close range... a private expression of her excitement, shared only with Saionji.

Yajinden, as the most senior shugenja on the island, would preside over the ceremony. Chisagawa joined his side once Bellena took her place by Saionji.

The Hantei scion was there; for the wedding to be legitimate a high-ranking member of the Imperial families had to state their approval. Apparently Jama was willing to take any kind of Odorihime's displeasure related to this on himself.

And there was someone to confirm the legality of proceedings.

As well as conformity with Rokugani tradition and custom.
