"I'd like to understand him better." he answered. "I have only glimpses of that life and only occasionally see the faces of those, like yourself, that he knew. I also worry about his family. A heavy burden was left upon them, one that he could not help with. I may be able to assist now, however."

The priest looked away. "Power corrupted him, made him believe that the way to greater good is through more power. And the more ground was slipping from under his feet, the higher he wanted to reach, not minding that his steps were bringing down avalanches onto those behind him, including his son. The Vengeful Sea had whispered to him subtly, but in the end she may have had her way. I can't imagine he departed in peace, and your own condition seems to say as much."

Having filled the container, he brought the apples to Alvaro. "Do you believe, then, that it is best if the Cornejo name not return to prominence? Is there no value left in it?"

"In the end I am a man of faith, not politics, Senor." The parson looked down sadly. "Besides, does it matter to you what I believe?"

"Si." He nodded. "Regardless of how or why, I am connected to the people here. I am not sure yet what actions I will take, but I hope to avoid the mistakes of the past. You've helped me see them clearer."

The priest was silent for a moment.

"I think Admiral Cornejo deserves that he is remembered fairly. For all the good and the bad he did, not just for what the Crown hates him for. If this feud festers, his legacy will only turn more bitter, awakening the worst in men and pleasing the Vengeful Sea."

"That is all I want." he nodded. "A legacy for his family and peace, for the living and the dead."

"I wish you to find a way, Senor." The parson nodded, then returned to picking apples.

Edogawa continued to help, turning the conversation to other, more general, topics. Regardless of what he would do, he had much to learn about the island.
