For an island that have been inhabited for over six decades it might be strange to have this spacious wild and undiscovered an interior still. And yet the challenging conditions of steep mountain slopes, often ending in almost-perpendicular walls of volcanic basalt, coated in thick jungles, have preserved the mystery and pristine condition of nature. Whole swaths of land near the top of the caldera of Mount Kappa remain secluded behind a chain of deep gorges cutting through the eastern side of the island.
The grassy north is not as forbidding, but poor soil conditions, unpleasant winds and foreboding mists keep most people away. The true wilderness begins just off the hillside outskirts of the West Port and quickly spreads out into an unforgivingly dense tropical vegetation that has no road through it, mainly approximate pathways that have to be retraced with machete in hand every now and then. The diversity of the area in terms of plantlife and wildlife is astounding and mesmerising even though human communities have already chipped away their share through creeping logging and poaching. It is the east that is most tamed, giving way to rolling hills and fertile valleys nestling between rocky outcroppings were agriculture can and does flourish. The arable land there was once dispersed but is now concentrated in the hands of the governor and organised into one great hacienda, La Finca de Jacintos.
