Often called 'white gold' by the locals, guano is a very important resource of the island, mostly for its high content of saltpeter crucial in the production of gunpowder, but it is also used in local farming as fertiliser. The harbourmaster of the East Port formally oversees the mining but the actual work falls to those honest men and women who are not afraid of getting themselves dirty... and smelly. It is quite sustainable; colonies of sea fowl linger here for easy access to fish as a warm current passes just beneath the site, perhaps taking its temperature from the geothermal vents deeper beneath the steep cliffs. Fishermen who learn from the example of birds could count on a rewarding catch.
