He had sent a message to the Emerald Magistrate. Asking to take some of her time, to discuss something. He had asked to meet aboard the Imperial Flagship. He awaited her aboard. He spent a few more of his coin to acquire something similar to his old kimonos for the meeting.

His hands were folded behind his back, as he looked out over the side of the ship, oceanward.

It had been a full enough day for the office of the Emerald Magistrate, which is to say herself, for Haruka. The matter in the morning didn't sit well with her, but these things were why she was brought on the journey.

The meeting request from the Shosuro was a surprise, though that did not stop Haruka from making herself available for the requested encounter.

"Looking for something, Shosuro-san?"

He turned, facing the Doji magistrate. A small smile on hia face, before bowing deeply. "Hai, Haruka-sama. I hope you've been well, aince the beach." He slowly approached, still keeping his hands behind him.

"Do you recall, me saying I wanted to learn from you?" An eyebrow quirked; watching her reactions. Pushing any thought of her attractiveness from his mind.

"I would like to assist you. Learn the law, and help keep it here."

Haruka thought about the Shosuro's request. "The law is a curious thing on the island. The natives have their own beliefs on the matter which are different from ours. Misguided." She sighed, her expression darkening somewhat. "Not based on honor, foremost. How they manage to maintain order, such as it is known here, I do not believe I will ever know."

She turned to regard Anzai. "To keep the law here is to keep the word of an Emperor many horizons away and in so doing, to embody an ideal. That no matter how far we range from our shores, the eyes of the Emperor sees what they do, that his voice and the law it carries is heard by their ears, and that if needed, his subjects be reminded that his reach is long."

"Can you assist me with that?"

He thought for a moment. He had his own thoughts on the gaijin and their laws. While he believed that the natives had every right to how their own laws should be applied.

It was important to remember where they came from. He looked to her, a face of determiniation. "Hai, Doji-sama. I can. We must not forget where we come from. To ensure that the rule of law be maintained."

"Good. You are engaged in my service, then." Haruka pronounced, with that same tone of voice she likely used whenever she passed judgement on someone. In a way, she just did. "If you are not already, familiarize yourself with the charter of the Emerald Magistrates. It is what guides us in our work and what we must abide by."

He bowes deeply again. Feeling the weight of the words coming down on him. A certain connection to the homeland, to traditions and norms that could not be forgotten. He would find a way to be the bridge between the two worlds.

"I will not let you down, Doji-sama. Your trust in me will be rewarded."

"Do well by yourself and your ancestors and everything else will work itself out." Haruka said, probably her form of encouragement. "Truth be told, I needed the help."

She rested her hands on the railing and looked out at the city beyond the ship. "This may come as some surprise to you, but I am not well suited to the actual street-level work of the magistracy. It is simply a different world than that I was born to. There is no shame in recognizing where I am deficient, only in doing nothing about it. So it is my hope you may assist me there."

The Scorpion moved next to the Crane. His gaze looking out with her. Breathing in through his nose, contemplating what the Doji said.

"I will do my best. People tend to open up to me, and I have proven myself far more adept at noticing and finding things than people assume of me." He smiled to her.

Still remembering their time on the Bay of Razorbacks, and her friend, Oink-chan.

"I am honored to lend my aid."

"Good. You seem confident and competent, Shosuro-san. I look forward to our partnership." Haruka said in an encouraging manner.

Oink-chan, for their pert, started snuffling around Anzai's leg and snorted agreeably. "Oink-chan's proven to be a very good judge of character; it seems you have their approval too."

Anzai smiled at the snuffling of Oink-chan, the creatures pleasant demeanor quite a welcome thing once again. "Then I must ensure I live up to the expectations of both." Closing his eyes, bowing his head as he spoke. A cool sense of determination flowing through his words.

"How have you found the island? Strange customs aside."

"I have not, to be honest." Haruka narrowed her eyes looking at the city beyond. "To maintain objectivity, I have made attempts not to involve myself overmuch in its affairs."

Which was really a fancy way of saying she had been shutting herself up on the ship and away from the new.

"I see, Doji-sama." It was said without judgement or a sense of what he was thinking. "I've taken residence in the Governess' Estate. The Gardens there are quite lovely. I think you could appreciate the beauty of them." Looking to her, he then realized how it could have been perceived.

"Gomen nasai, Doji-sama. I wouldn't presume to invite you to my abode, but if you ever wanted to take a stroll through the gardens themselves, I'd be more than happy to escort you. And Oink-chan."

Haruka considered the offer. Her fingertips rapped rhythmically against the railing softly, timed to the waves against the side of the ship.

"There is merit to your offer, Shosuro-san. Your family is reputed for the gardens they keep; if you speak well of the governesses' garden, then I should do well to take up your offer and see what this land contributes to the art of gardening."

The faintest of smiles at her words. "They do remind me a bit of home. Maybe that is why I chose to reside there." He said nothing of the beauty of the Governess herself.

"Anytime you wish, I make myself available to you, Doji-sama. The West Port itself is rather full of character itself. Should you desire an escort in coming into it proper, please let me know. I have heard rumor that it may be best to travel in groups."

That got her interest.

"Oh? What rumors would make you say that, Shosuro-san? Is it dangerous ashore in the city?"

"That there may be some who view a lone, foreign samurai as easy prey. Either for their belongings, or other things..." He would turn to more fully look at the magistrate, keeping his eyes focused on her face. Reading her reactions.

"We are very far from home. Amongst a very different culture. While exciting, it would behoove us to keep our wits."

"They are not so different, then, from the more unseemly parts of our Empire." Haruka's expression hardened into disdain. She turned to look at Anzai.

"But you are right. Their gaijin ways of thinking make them more difficult to predict, more dangerous. Such clear insight commends you well already."

"Well, what can be more unseemly than a Scorpion, when necessary." He felt a bit of pride at Haruka's words, but did not show it on his face. "It may just be some learning on my part. Studying some of the gaijin languages allows a certain understanding if their culture. How they are put together shows how the people think of the world."

It showed in how Rokugani language informed the social strata, the rules by which their culture lived.

Must be some kind of universal truth.

"And through it, the Empire. That," Haruka placed emphasis on the word, "Is why we are even out here to begin with."
