The Captain observed from the top deck as his crewmen fought a mock battle to repel an enemy "boarding action". Orders had come down from the Imperial Admiral to make the fleet ready for action, and Kitsu Keiji was determined that Kunshu Maru would be prepared. With the captain's permission, the boatswain had recruited some locals to fill out the crew complement, and Keiji watched the new crewmen as they skirmished with bokken and blunted spears. They weren't bad fighters, he thought. A little training and a little discipline and they would do very nicely.

Gunpowder was too dear to use in a training exercise, so some of the crewmen wielded short sticks, pointing them threateningly at their opponents and shouting "Pow!" This had seemed idiotic at first, but after seeing the teppandoka in action, Keiji had grudgingly decided that he couldn't pretend any longer that guns didn't matter. Something had to be done to train against them, and this was the best they had been able to come up with.
