Admiral Jama had ordered the fleet to make ready for an armed expedition, and so Kunshu Maru and her crew were performing one training exercise after another in preparation for action. Ship Captain Kitsu Keiji stood at the tiller guiding the ship in a series of tricky maneuvers, while First Officer Muhaki Berena and Gunner's Mate Mirumoto Kenzo ran drills with the musketmen and cannon crew.

The captain, Second Officer Utsusemi and Chief Engineer Hida Ringo led the crew in a merry battle song as they worked.

Quote:
Stand out to sea, fight our battle cry!
We'll never change course so foes steer shy!
Roll out the guns, anchors aweigh!
Sail on to victory, we’ll smash the spiders, hooray!
Anchors aweigh, anchors aweigh!
Farewell to foreign shores, we sail at break of day!

Keiji’s rolls
Manoeuvring and Signalling with 1 FR for effect, Sailing 47 hits TN40 (note: forgot +1 for Kenzo in orokos)
Motivation with 1 FR to reduce TN, Perform: Song 42 hits TN35 (forgot +1 for Utsusemi in orokos)

Berena’s rolls
Live Fire Exercises, Firearms 54 hits TN40
Sounding with 1 FR for effect, Lore: Nature 46 hits TN40

Kenzo was there, dressed properly in his Rokugani clothing. He looked fresh, sharp, and cheerful, going about his tasks with even more enthusiasm than usual.

Passing by the singers, Kenzo gave them a smile. He couldn't sing, especially, but as he moved to his next position, his feet tapped along in rhythm to the song.

He took up a stance by Berena, waiting for her orders.

It felt good again to be back with the Kunshu Maru-crew, Utsusemi reflected as she followed the Kitsu captain's lead. When leaving Dragon's Guard, she had expected to be mostly in the way on a ship, but somehow the Lion managed to make everyone useful... even if she was delegated to a supporting-role.

Singing was something she was slowly growing fonder of trying herself, so it was only fun to join in with the much louder men as Keiji rallied their morale in his own unique way.

"Man the guns!" Keiji ordered. "Belay that belaying pin! Prepare to repel boarders! We'll need to be ship-shape to face whatever the Admiral is sending against tomorrow!"

Stopping near Kenzo and Utsusemi, he spoke in a lower tone. "What do you think of the new recruits?" Keiji asked, tilting his head in the direction of some of the islanders that joined the crew after the last shore leave rotation.

"Hm," Utsusemi gave a critical eye in the direction of the new recruits. "It will take some time before they work with the same synchronization as your seasoned crew, but well... that's what this is all about, no? They seem to know their jobs well, though, so it is only a matter of them adjusting to the others."

Not that she was an expert, but since Keiji asked, she offered her honest opinion.

Kenzo gave a respectful bow. "I would agree with Agasha-sama's assessment, captain."

He straightened, his lips pursing. "Additionally... I don't speak the language, so it is difficult for me to know for sure. But it is my impression that they are eager to work. Morale is high." He said, bowing again.

Bellena was making herself busy seeing to the drilling of the men that Keiji had brought aboard.

"They do seem eager to serve," Keiji agreed. "But they need some polish and discipline. These drills will help, of course, but superior leadership will be a decisive factor in any engagement. I can't be everywhere, so I'll be counting on all of you officers to keep the men, both new and old, pointed in the right direction and working together to accomplish our mission."

"Of course," Utsusemi nodded curtly, having grown used to the more direct and efficient communication under Keiji's command while aboard the vessel.
