Kitsu Keiji had summoned his officers to dine with him that night. The ship's cook had laid out a table of tea, rice and fish for dinner. The rolling motion of the high seas had made Keiji's stomach a little queasy at the thought of food, but the captain made up his mind not to show it.

Bellena woke up from her sleep shortly before the meal was supposed to start. She tended to have control of the ship at night when it was most difficult for the fleet to navigate without her expertise. Keiji had asked everyone to assemble for a meal, which in theory wouldn't have been a problem, but she tended to have somewhat an uneasy stomach on sea after waking up...

But no matter, she was expected and so she arrived.

The voyage had just begun, and Kenzo was still exploring the wonders of ship travel. He enjoyed climbing up to view from the crow's nest, and seemed fascinated by the birds and fish that sometimes followed the boat.

It was in those spirits that he arrived at the Captain's table. He gave both Keiji and Berena a bow, crisp, neat, and clearly unhindered by nausea. "Kitsu-sama. Thank you for the invitation. Muhaki-sama." He straightened, smiling and cheerful.

While the Imperial Chaperone had decidedly dressed down since they set sail, favouring plain kimono and hakama and her hair braided into neat buns, she still managed to cut a picture of perfect poise and elegance. Not even the churning waves of the sea seemed to trouble her as she arrived for the gathering.

"Kitsu-kancho*, thank you for the invitation," despite her technically higher status than the Kitsu, the captain was afforded all respect by Utsusemi. For her, the captain was effectively daimyo of his own little sea-realm. And the same honour was extended to Berena as well. "Muhaki-kokaishi**."

And a bow to Kenzo as well, "Kenzo-san. Good to see you are well."

"Konbanwa, minna-san," Keiji greeted them, returning the bows of the other officers before taking a seat. "Please be seated. How are you finding the ship so far?"

Bellena nodded greetings to everyone. And then simply nodded her head positively to Keiji's question.

"Agasha-sama." Kenzo said, returning the bow, more formally than he usually addressed her. But this was slightly unusual circumstances, after all. He did give her a smile, though.

He waited for the others to be seated before seating himself. "It's a very impressive ship, Kitsu-kancho." He inclined his head. "I am very pleased to be on your crew."

"Hm," she nodded in agreement with the others. "It is my first time on a ship this far from the coast, but it is an interesting experience so far. I am honored to be member of this ship, captain. I only hope I do not get in the way too much of the sailors and crew."

"Nonsense, you can't possibly get in the way of the crew," the captain replied, chuckling. "In fact, as ship's officers, I expect to put you all to work. I have every confidence that you'll be up to the task, though."

Bellena again only nodded in acknowledgement.

"Thank you for your faith in myself and everyone then," she bowed her head politely. "We are ready to serve, captain."

Kenzo gave Keiji a firm nod. "Of course, Kitsu-kancho. We will assist in any way we can."

His lips parted, but hesitating, he glanced at Utsusemi. It was probably not his place to talk, as the youngest officer present. He waited, his expression cheerful.

"How are the monks and artisans settling in?" the captain inquired. "I'm sure they are very dedicated to founding this new temple, but I imagine being underway on the high seas must be very different than what they are accustomed to."

Bellena's eyebrows pointed the direction her eyes went... which was at Utsusemi. She looked at the woman as she waited for a response.

"It is a new experience for them, but I have heard no complaints. Most of them seemed to have been prepared mentally at least for the potential unpleasantness of sea-travel. The monks, once most of them have adjusted to the sea-life, will probably be a great boon in seeing to the spiritual well-being of the crew and providing them with guidance in difficult times."

If only words from the Tao could turn a man away from mutiny, she would think in a few days time.

She gave a nod to Berena, acknowledging that the woman was as much responsible for the project as she was.

Noticing the unusual quiet of the foreign woman, Kenzo gave her a concerned frown. "Are you all right, Muhaki-sama?" He asked quietly.

Bellena responded to the question with a look that to non-Rokugani was quite normal; one that would say, 'Whatever do you mean?' to a people with more animated facial features. She then nodded and said, "Yes, Mirumoto-san. I am well."

"Very good," the captain replied to Utsusemi. "You will inform me and the First Officer if their condition changes."

He turned toward Berena as well. "First Officer, you are the most familiar with the waters and islands ahead," Keiji stated. "What can you tell us about what to expect?"

He raised his eyebrows just a little as she made a face at him, but chose to go along with her words. "Very good." He said, nodding.

After a moment, he reached out, hand finding the teapot. "Please, allow me to pour you some tea. In fact, I think that as the lowest ranking individual here, that should be my duty." His lips twitched. "Besides, the Mirumoto have a strong tea ceremony tradition." He said blandly, lifting the pot to pour into each of the others' cups, falling silent once more as the captain spoke.

She tilted her head as she thought for a moment, "There is very little in terms of 'islands' for quite some distance. The seas are relatively calm this close to the mainland... The winds aren't excessively strong until we get a bit further out; might run out of wind for a few days here and there. This time of year we shouldn't see too many troubles in terms of storms until we've been on the ocean for a few weeks. Hopefully, with any luck we'll be able to avoid one of the harsher typhoons that can pop up at the points where the currents change in temperature."
