"Thank you, Mirumoto-san," Keiji acknowledged, as Kenzo poured the tea.

Muhaki Berena wrote:
"There is very little in terms of 'islands' for quite some distance. The seas are relatively calm this close to the mainland... The winds aren't excessively strong until we get a bit further out; might run out of wind for a few days here and there. This time of year we shouldn't see too many troubles in terms of storms until we've been on the ocean for a few weeks. Hopefully, with any luck we'll be able to avoid one of the harsher typhoons that can pop up at the points where the currents change in temperature."

Keiji nodded. "It sounds like good sailing for awhile, Fortunes willing," he agreed. "We'll continue to keep lookouts just in case, of course. Fortunately, we've been blessed with a solid crew." Keiji nodded at the other officers to show that he included them among this number, then lifted his cup to sip the tea.

Bellena continued her march of nodding.

Utsusemi kept a hand raised to her mouth, appearing to be thinking over the question Keiji asked of Berena and her answer, though Kenzo at least would know that she was in fact hiding her smile over his remark about Mirumoto tea ceremony.

She murmured a quiet word of gratitude for the tea, but let Keiji and Berena control the current conversation, as this was a subject out of her league.

As the captain seemed to adress them all, she nodded. "A winner of the regatta, and someone who has travelled the seas for years and have a familiarity with where we are going. It would seem we are quite fortunate."

"Apart from the potential storms or lack of wind and ailments that arise from conditions like these, what other dangers should we be prepared for, Muhaki-san? Are there pirates or the like in the waters we will be travelling?"

"It depends on what you classify as a 'pirate'." She replied.

"Most boats that fit that description in these parts are of Mantis make and crew. So... hopefully for the time being the clout of the head of this expedition should afford us some leeway. Further out it may be possible for there to be bands of 'pirates'... Though most of them would consider themselves to be merchants. To be honest... there isn't much a difference a lot of the time. Any other boat you come across that isn't commissioned by the Tortoise is likely to be unfriendly." She straightened her neck up.

"But a fleet this large is sure to scare off some of the smaller and more frequently seen pirates out there. It's when this boat sets off on its own that piracy will become a much more real threat."

Settling down after pouring the tea, Kenzo gave Berena a sharp look. "I see. Are they likely to be dissuaded by our arms? Or will they be similarly equipped?"

"Depends on the ship. But there are definitely several types of Merenaese and Thranish ships that are better equipped than these vessels." She replied.

"In what way, First Officer?" Keiji inquired. "Surely the newest, most modern ships constructed by the Imperial Shipyards must be among the best in their class."

She shook her head, "Nah... these are solid ships for sure, but comparatively seriously lacking in firepower. This ship's bulk also affects its maneuverability in some ways... the difference between us and them can be reduced somewhat with an experienced crew, but still... many of the boats you'll find have cannons that will do serious damage to a bulky ship and never let them get close enough to board."

Keiji nodded. "I understand 'cannon' are quite effective at reducing fixed fortifications during a siege," he said. "But can they really hit a moving ship on the waves? That would seem rather more accurate than I had understood them to be."

"With enough skill, practice, and luck it is quite possible." She replied.

"And in terms of skill and practice... this fleet is seriously lacking. But hopefully... with the proper mindset and dedication, can start to chip away at that divide soon enough."

"Practice, we can do," Keiji replied. "I am minded to arrange some drills for the crew while we are underway. Perhaps even a few surprise inspections, to ensure proper readiness. I would like to work towards making the crew of the Kunshu Maru the best trained in the fleet."

She once again nodded.

Utsu quietly listened to the conversation, not feeling the need to voice her knowledge on the subject since Berena had it well in hand.

As the captain expressed his plans of making the Kunshu Maru the best fleet, she joined in nodding. They were the vanguard, so it might be inevitable that they would see confrontations. Kenzo was more suited than she to drill-practises with the crew, though she knew she would have to participate too.

Kenzo nodded earnestly. "Kitsu-kancho, I think drills would be an excellent idea. As I understand it, we have much more crew than is needed to maintain the functioning of the ship at any time. And it seems that when we're, ah, going straight, it requires even fewer. Perhaps the rest could engage in drills at times like that?"

"Indeed," Keiji agreed. "Drills will help keep the men occupied, and will make us better prepared should we encounter any overly-aggressive 'merchants.' "

"We'll begin in the morning," he said.

Ringo had been quiet up until this point. Mostly because being out on the high seas actually was getting the better of him at the moment. He barely manages to keep his focus.

He nods at the suggestion. "Plus it will be good to develop the teamwork and camaraderie among the crew."

/ Seasickness = 6. Fails.
Forgot to add Sailing. Still fails.

Kenzo nodded, first at the captain, then at the Hida.

"Ah..." He frowned. "May I ask, what form do these sorts of drills take? I've done drills on land, of course."
