"The kami I entreated promised to alleviate some of the damage to the ship." The priestess looked down at the wood and then back up to him with a smile. "We have not sunk so I assume there was some impact due to my prayer."

She blinked and opened up her satchel. Damn! Of course it wouldn't appear back to me.

The priestess pulled out her favorite spell and went through the motions to bolster her memory. She winced in pain while reciting in, nearly throwing off her pronunciation, but she managed to barely awaken her dearest friend. The kami infused its wit into her mask, as she had done many times before, and she went to work towards recalling the scroll she had lost...

From an outsider perspective, she was likely profusely muttering to herself while attempting to block out any outside distractions.

Rokuro obtained what he asked for, and then waited by the door, watching in silent befuddlement.

Akarei eventually turned to Rokuro and smiled. "I simply had to devote something to memory." She quickly muttered another prayer under her breath and then looked back to her betrothed. "I lost one of my scrolls. Admittedly, such a thing is disgraceful and some would be inclined to commit seppuku.

"I suppose I was raised to be more pragmatic."

He looked surprised.

"It's... a scroll. Surely there are more copies."

Setting down the clean water and cloth, he began to tear it into strips.

"I'm no medic, but I know we should at least be sure you don't have anything broken..."

Contemplating what she had said, he added, "I don't know much about magic traditions, but it isn't like it was stolen, if it went overboard, it is quite gone; no one could take your family secrets."

"Each scroll is a sacred text written by the Clan scribes," she replied, "While there are more copies, they are not so disposable." The woman looked at her pack and then back to him. "The scroll I lost is one of the most common in the empire. The prayer contained within is no secret at all." She then shrugged. "The cipher is valuable too, but I suppose I do not need to report it if its sunken into the ocean."

"I see."

With a faint frown, he added, "I'd think the destruction of a scroll could be remedied easily enough, provided the contents were known by the family... certainly there must be records... I could see allowing one to be stolen being a matter of concern."

"It's not a problem of knowledge. It's a problem of shame. What would your family think if you lost your wakizashi?"

He contemplated that.

"My wakizashi cannot be turned to mush by rain when using it to fight a storm."

Glancing at her, he added, "If I simply snapped it through carelessness, I suppose the matter might be different."

The redhead let out a sigh. "The point was that the scrolls are sacred in the way a samurai's daisho is. We are expected to maintain them." She shrugged. "I memorized it now. If I had done so before, then I wouldn't have had to pull out the scroll during the storm."

Rokuro nodded. "Then you've gained valuable knowledge you didn't have before, and you were willing to risk something sacred for your duty."

He raised an eyebrow, "Is that so wrong? I imagine it only makes the action more admirable; to risk something of value for your crew."

"I suppose that is one way to look at it," she stated after a few moments of contemplation. She then shrugged. "I doubt the crew know that I sacrificed so much."

"I doubt they do."

He quirked his head. A faint smile.

"Do they need to?"

After all... I know... and you know.

The priestess gave another sigh. "No, but a little recognition wouldn't hurt."

"If it is any consolation, I know."

He carried the bandages over and set them down for her to use if needed.

"And I appreciate what you did."

"Thank you," she said with a faint, genuine smile. "It does mean something, even if I refuse to admit it."
