Caught off-guard, Khenbish barked a short, sharp laugh. “No, Moto Khenbish.

Shinjo and Ide must be the only families she knows, to mistake me for a diplomat.

She nodded.

Moto... it was of course a completely unfamiliar name. Given his appearance and complete unfamiliar with Rokugani language, there was the possibility he represented a lesser people absorbed into the ki-rin. Or perhaps one of Shinjo's followers had been given their own family name, and it was the simple necessity of life beyond civilization resulted in the influx of gajin blood.

Finishing the food that Hikari had given him, he nodded in approval, not bad. He glanced at her while they walked, she's just a kid, what idiot stranded her out here, alone, when she can't even speak a lick of merenaese?

He looks kind of scary. And cursed. Is that why he's out here instead of... wherever their main holding is?

She observed him closely for a few moments, her eyes drawn to the parangu at his side. Was that supposed to be a stand-in for a katana or wakizashi?

Noting her gaze on his weapon brought his mind to the slender blade she herself was carrying. That caused Khenbish to study her for a few moments, his left eye bottomless and staring. Could she even wield that without hurting herself? It seems unwise.

He didn't know how to reassure her that he was competent in parangu's use. Not as skilled as he was with the musket, but he liked to imagine that he could hold his own well enough.

Hikari was no wielder of bladed weapons. Though Khenbish might note that the way she carried herself suggested she at least knew her to defend herself with her fists and feet.

"Wakizashi," she said, pointing at the blade at her side.

"Wah-kee zah-shee," Khenbish nodded, he touched the hilt of the short, brutal weapon, "parangu. I..." he indicated to himself.

Glancing around, he spotted a nearby merchant stall, less common outside the Hoof, but there were still various hawkers dotted about. Khenbish moved to the stall, turning to face the street, he crossed his arms and glowered, stance firm. He made a show of putting his hands on his hips and giving the passers-by cold stares, before returning to Hikari and taking up Yul's reins once more.

The act confused her. Was he a local lawman, and this hawker in violation of some local ordnance? If so, why did he just scare off potential customers instead of talking to the hawker themselves?

She tried to see what the hawker was peddling that offended him so.

Khenbish shrugged off her confusion. Didn't think she'd get it, I doubt she's as sharp as that wah-kee zah-shee she carries. He started along the street again, he had patience for things with purpose, but this game of charades was wearing thin, and he had things to do.

Even if she'd known about how he was less than impressed with her mental faculties, she wouldn't have particularly cared. As far as she was concerned, this had turned into something that had nothing to do with searching for a house; communication was not as paramount now as observation. Even if immediate intent was not made clear, the little things would add up over time and she'd get a better understanding of this place and its culture.

"Huh," she followed him again as he started moving. "Well, guess he didn't have any good stuff anyway, neh?"

Khenbish grunted noncommittally, continuing his search for a suitable abode to wait out the remainder of his time on the island. His steed snorted softly as they walked.

"Well, I think this really isn't the side of the island for me, no offense."

Having someone to talk to who didn't understand you was actually quite a pleasant experience, Hikari found.

He ignored her, scanning the side streets as they passed. Her words washed past him, like the murmuring of the combined chatter of the other passers-by.
