Emphases: Rokugani, Mekhem, Yobanjin, Thranish, Sheel, Merenaese, Yodotai, Ujik-hai, Ra'Shari, Senpet, Ivindi (Rhumal)
Ashalan*, Naga*, Nezumi*, Kitsu*, Troll*, Kenku*, Zokujin*, Oni*

Languages marked with an asterisk are considered non-human languages.

You can only acquire an Emphasis to this Skill if it is your native tongue or you have the corresponding Languages advantage.

You are fluent in all languages you have as Emphases in this Skill and can translate between them and teach them to others.

Any public use of Lore: Linguistics for languages other than Rokugani is not generally considered a use of a High Skill, but of a Merchant Skill for other human languages and of a Low Skill for non-human ones unless the GM specifically rules otherwise.

Mastery Abilities:
Rank 3: You can acquire one additional Emphasis to this skill for free. It does not count against your normal limit of Emphases per Skill Rank.
Rank 5: You earn a FR on all Calligraphy Skill Rolls in the language you have Emphasis for in Lore: Linguistics.
Rank 7: You can acquire two additional Emphases to this skill for free. It does not count against your normal limit of Emphases per Skill Rank.

Human Languages

Rokugani is the language of the Children of Sun and Moon, perfected by Lady Doji, Kakita Kiyamori and Doji Nio and consistently taught to the samurai class of Rokugan for the past few centuries. Among the bonge of Rokugan, fluency in Rokugani is not a given, and purity of language practically unheard of. Most of peasants speak a hybrid of a simple Rokugani and the language of their forebears (Yobanjin). [Closest real-life language: Japanese; for peasants north of Seikitsu the root language is Chinese, Burmese, Tibetan; for those south of Seikitsu - Chinese, Vietnamese or Thai.]

Mekhem, or the language of the Prophet, is the dominant language of the Burning Sands, and default one for those not otherwise specified. Specifically, this is the basic language for the denizens of Medinaat al-Salaam and the adjacent Fields of Rolling Grain as well as most of J'li'lu cities like Aqahba where it has probably originated from. It's purest literary form is practised in the Jewel. Mekhem has also recently become the lingua franca of the Tarkhanate and many of the Ide use it as their primary one. [Closest real-life language: Arabic.]

Yobanjin is a mother tongue for all Yobanjin tribes north of Rokugan as well as for many steppe Unicorn (except the Moto), for whom this was 'Rokugani' during the time of their departure. [Closest real-life language: Chinese.]

Thranish is the language of the Kingdom of Thrane, but similar languages are used by the tribes of Nyask living in the cold north bordering the Yodotai Empire. [Closest real-life language: Anglo-Saxon to English.]

Sheel is the hybrid language of the Sheel Kingdom that has loosened its Hanif roots because of expansion. [Closest real-life language: A hybrid of German, Italian, Hungarian and Western Slavic, preference can be given to any of these]

Merenaese is the language of the Kingdom of Merenae, but also a lingua franca for most of the maritime trade. It is a separate language, but originating from the same Hanif root as the language of the Yodotai. It is a living language, and has borrowed quite a lot from Mekhem. [Closest real-life language: Spanish and Portuguese.]

Yodotai is the language of the Yodotai Empire, and relatively popularised across its many ethnicities. Someone who wants to play a specific ethnicity (like Radian) may assume he also speaks the language of that ethnicity at the same fluency. [Closest real-life language: Latin.]

Ujik-hai is the language of the nomads of the Burning Sands that have joined the Unicorn, the Moto, and is still prevalent among them both among the steppe Unicorn and in the Tarkhanate, though is very popular in other Unicorn families too (especially the Naoko). Many of the bedouin tribes across the Burning Sands (like from Ayst) speak a similar language, and the player can assume to be sufficiently fluent in them. [Closest real-life language: Mongol and Korean, other Turkic languages for non-Moto bedouin tribes.]

Ra'Shari is the language of the Ra'Shari nomads organised in Caravans. The origins of their language are unknown, but it shows similarities to Ujik-hai, Ivindi, Rhumal or even Ashalan. [Closest real-life language: Romani, a bit of Jewish languages like Yiddish or Aramaic could work too.]

Senpet is the language of the Senpet Empire, and relatively popularised across its many ethnicities. Someone who wants to play a specific ethnicity may assume he also speaks the language of that ethnicity at the same fluency. [Closest real-life language: Egyptian.]

Ivindi is the primary (but not only) language of the Ivory Kingdoms, dominating in their eastern part. The spread of Ivindi is connected with houses of Suresh or Singh holding the throne of the Maharaja. It is the dominant language in the Coral Islands too. Rhumal is similar but distinct, and is mostly related to the rulership and influence of House Rafiq. It dominates in the western part of the Ivory Kingdoms and on Anisrana. [Closest real-life language: Hindi, though more Tamil or Malayalam for Ivindi and more Gujarati or Bengali for Rhumal; for Coral Islands - more Malay.]

Non-Human Languages

Ashalan language is exclusive to that mysterious race, and very hard to learn. [Closest real-life language: Farsi, though more accurately old Persian like Avestan.]

Naga language shows some semblance to some human languages outside Rokugan, but its main dialects are spoken by related races of the Naga, the Ningyo and the Naar Teban. [Closest real-life language: Vedic Sanskrit.]

Nezumi have their own language, moderately consistent across their tribes [No real-life language precedence]

Kitsu language would be practically extinct if not for the Tsuno speaking its perverted version. [No real-life language precedence]

Troll language is almost extinct too, but we can assume that various Shadowlands creatures (ogres, bakemono) have captured some of the troll heritage and speak some version of it. [No real-life language precedence]

Zokujin language is very specific and unlike anything else. [No real-life language precedence]

Oni language could be just understood as some generic black speech, but since the original Champions of Jigoku were rakshasas, we can assume some early creatures of Jigoku speak Rhumal, while the others - Rokugani, so the current Oni language would be a twisted perversion of them both.
