Masquerade! [Event, EE10]

For everyone else it was perfectly pleasant conversation between a bodyguard and his charge. "Please, feel free to relax and enjoy yourself this evening, Kenzo-san. I will call upon you when I wish to be escorted home."

She graced him with a gentle bow as he was dismissed to spend the evening as he wished.

Kenzo took a deep breath. "Very good." Kenzo bowed in return, the same polite smile on his lips. "Let me know when you're ready, and I shall place myself at your service." Well, that was certainly true. "Until then, Utsusemi-sama." He said.

He hesitated a moment before moving away, casting Utsu one more glance. "Perhaps I shall wander back this way later. I understand there will be some dancing later. That has a certain amount of appeal for me." The glance lingered a moment longer, before he turned away with a smile.

And with a few last words, they parted. For now.

A mysterious masked lady appears, wearing a fine powder blue, standing half a head shorter than most of the other ladies in attendance, a small portion of her shock white hair hidden behind a mask that weaves into her hairdo, making it slightly difficult to tell where mask ends and hair begins.

This 'masquerade' thing isn't working too well. Then again, a true disguise does not seem to be the point. The little Crane flits about, observing the event; it seems the mask is an excuse. Plausible deniability to be as ostentatious as one pleases, at the expense of good taste. Wealth is no replacement for style.

As he breathed in, Kenzo could pick up the scent of her perfume. It was like a breath of home, of the mountains and the spring flowers there...

"We have a common interest in dance then. Perhaps we shall meet again there," Utsusemi bowed her head, her gaze following him as he parted.

Turning, she spotted the fox so cunning and free, the man who makes the sign of the Z... oh wait, it was just Edogawa. But he seemed to have really embraced the costume-part of a masked ball. "Señor! I believed you might be a shadow in the night," the golden dragon with the silver mane chuckled mirthfully.

"Do not be alarmed, senorita." he smiled. "Not all shadows hide danger. Sometimes, they shield the innocent from the cruel eyes of tyranny."

"But how do one know you are such a benevolent shadow, and not one of danger?" Her smile was partially hidden by the raised fan that was cooling her with gentle motions.

Whoever could be the tiny young woman with the very white hair? Surely everyone at the ball was a mystery! Well, it was fun to play at the mystery, anyway. The librarian with the artistic talent she'd met the other day was hard to mistake. She'd enjoyed talking to her the other day, and at least didn't feel too awkward approaching.

Truth be told, someone else had also caught her eye, but approaching that person wasn't so wise at the moment, it seemed.

She bowed to Tori, rising with a warm smile. "Good evening, Explorer-san. If you don't mind me saying, you did something exceptional with your mask, there."

She approached the Dragon yojimbo, and gave him a steady bow when he spotted her at his side.

"Mirumoto-sama; you look... lovely," she said softly to Kenzo, though it was clear it her mind was somewhere else. Distracted. Her gaze tracking to the doorway now and then.
"Have you tried the wine?"

"Sometimes, all you can do is trust in your own judgment." he nodded. "But, I am better dressed than most shadows."

"Hmmm..." the masked dragon gave him a scrutinizing glance. "I suppose you are, señor. You are well-dressed, indeed. A shadow so well-dressed could not be a dangerous one, I say."

Kenzo's gaze snapped back from elsewhere, although Ran got his full attention once he had. He gave her a smile and a bow. "Ah, thank you, Muhaki-san." After a moment, and a closer look at her, his eyebrows went up. "My word. As do you. Those colors suit you very well." He said, giving her a warm smile.

"In fact, I have not." He said, shaking his head. "But I've overheard some fine things about it. Shall I get us each a glass? Ah..." He broke off, noticing her abstraction. "Is there something the matter, Muhaki-san?"

Colour touched her cheeks at his compliment. "Oh, hai, thank you." She raised her glass, it was empty, and gestured that he could take it from her. "I have already imbibed but I would not turn down another, Mirumoto-sama... Oh, hai, I am... looking for Wataru-kun," she said, lowering her voice, concern then in her tone.

"Certainly." It only took a few moments. Kenzo waited for one of the servers to go by, and promptly pounced. Mirumoto ambidexterity displayed its usefulness in quickly switching one empty glass for two moderately full ones. He handed one to Ran with a bow.

"Oh, of course. Your fiancé." Kenzo hadn't actually met the fellow. "You're meeting him here, then?"

Nodding in thanks, Ran accepted the new glass, and held it tightly, "I have ... heard things, about what happened." Her eyes narrowed behind her elegant mask as her gaze once again settled on Gusai Susumu. After a moment, she tore away to look back at Kenzo, and softened. "I worry about him."

The black fan fluttered slightly.

"You flatter, o' masked defender of the innocent," the dragon smiled with a polite nod. "But I heard there would be music and dance, so I had to come to see and experience it for myself."

Kenzo's brows drew down in mild alarm. "But... he's all right, isn't he? I'd heard he'd gone missing, but I understood he'd been rescued."

After a moment, he softened as well, his gaze growing more concerned. "Have you spoken with him since then?"

She simply shook her head, then had a long sip of wine. She was growing accustomed to the foreign taste of it. She could grow to like it very much.

"I see." Kenzo said. For just a moment, his lips pressed together.

After a moment, he smiled. "I'm sure he'll be alright. Do you know what he'll be wearing? Perhaps he wanted to surprise you." His lips parted; after a moment, he lifted his glass to them, taking a sip of the wine himself.

"Someone would've informed me if it were otherwise, right?" she looked to Kenzo, hopeful. "If he... weren't alright? Someone would've told me?" she swallowed a lump in her throat then, and attempted to calm herself. She set her own lips in a straight line, and exhaled through her nostrils.

"He is nothing if not full of surprises. I very much hope you two meet before we go our separate ways, Kenzo-sama," she said gently, keeping her voice low again.
