Doused in light in preparation of the evening, La Finca de Jacintos was an enchanting place. Floral garlands and bouquets, elegant tableware, refreshments of delicate meats, vegetables, fruits and cheeses, good wine, masqueraded service, secluded talking spots with books or chessboards, enjoyable breeze and scents, the hall of the estate converted into ballroom with external paved courtyards opened for socialising and walks... Juan de Almeria apparently knows how to throw a party and does not shy away from making significant expenses to make it happen.

The esteemed guests slowly trickle in...

Ruqqayah had been saving her nicest clothes. She hadn't broken them out since she left home except for tonight. She wanted to represent her family well... She was actually in unusually good form, socially, thought she didn't put any real extra effort into leveraging it.

It had taken Kenzo a bit of time and consideration to find something appropriate for him to wear. If formality had been no concern, it would have been simple; there were plenty of options to fit his rugged style. But formality was a consideration; to some extent, the Dragon would be judged on how he dressed. Much of the more formal clothing, however, did not suit Kenzo at all. His rustic charm and strongly masculine features looked quite out of place with the more frilly clothing. While it was formal, it would not impress, and Kenzo did very much want to impress, after all.

Eventually, he found a compromise. A high collared brown canvas jacket, well-tailored and sporting brass buckles, let him reach the desired level of formality, but had enough pseudo-military styling to highlight his yojimbo status. Complete with olive trousers, to match his usual color scheme, fine boots, and, of course, the belt he'd wanted, suitable for holding guns, swords, or both at the same time. The effect was completed by a mask, perfectly made for him, matching both his desired formality level and that of his clothing. A jade pendant rested at the hollow of his throat, the collar open just a bit at the front.

Kenzo slowly scanned the crowd, his head turning this way and that. His fan was in his hand, up and open; between that and the mask, his face was entirely covered, his eyes the only visible clues as to his reaction as he spotted various familiar forms.

The man made his entrance with with visible dignity in his step. Perhaps not noticeable at first, that was rectified as the candle lights reflected on his outfit's gold trimmings to give anotherwordly quality to the pearl colored fabric. The diamonds of his mask seemed to shine on their own which contrasted, along with the rest of the garnment, his flowing raven black hair, sun-kissed skin and the long black sash to his waist. The sash seemed to hold a blade of some kind, likely ceremonial in nature.

For all intent and purposes, the man looked like an exotic prince.

Everything had been secured for the masquerade. Loans squared away. Purchases made. Anzai felt at home in his new Mask, his fan unfolded over his lips. He kept his long hair loose, appearing as a man of decadence as he could.

He had contemplated his entrance being as tempting as possible, but then he thought of Akaichou. Were she there, he wouldn't wish to embarrass her. Instead, he relied on his training, his natural and learned talents.

A true princess has arrived. Wearing her new unique and lighter Junihitoe, made by the tailors and seamstresses of Diaz & Ghaznawi, a magnificient work of art that combined gaijin and traditional rokugani characteristics. This new junihitoe mixed some gaijin manufacture details but kept the spirit and essence of what is to be a rokugani. A sign of both a new era, but also respect to the history and culture of generations of ancestors. Every single detail of her clothes was meant to reflect that sentiment and her position as superintendent for Kameyama-Jima and as the noble daughter of Seppun Kentoshi.

Hinami's mask was even more spectacular. Made by wonderful fabrics and encrusted with gems and precious stones. It was clearly of gaijin manufacture since it was a gift. Surely it was given to her by a very powerful man.

Her set was finished by silver and gold jewelry, her jade pendant, a layer of traditional rokugani makeup and perfume. She was also carrying her 'new' fan and her peace-bonded wakizashi was safely in her obi.

It would be unseemly to overshadow the young Imperial princess, who was clearly looking to impress a certain gaijin governor. Utsusemi was looking to impress too, but in a different way, as she had no need to impress a potential suitor or potential lover.

And unlike some unfortunate souls, all of Utsusemi's extravagant clothing and accessories had survived the trip, so she had enough to go with her new dress, which was quite the different fashion choice for her. The outer layer of the dress was made of silk with the colour of golden sand, with broderie anglaise and golden beads sewn into the delicate fabric. The underlayer was light velvet, in the shade of dark bronze. Its construction was light, made for the tropical climate of the island, and it showed more than she was used to around her chest and the nape of her neck, though it still managed to be within modest bounds of propriety for Merenaese fashion. A nice, but perhaps a little plain-looking pendant rested below her collarbone.

The white hair had been brushed until it shone almost like polished white silver, arranged in a deceptively simple half-up chignon (avatar) that was secured in place with two beautiful kanzashi (1, 2). The pair had been a wedding gift from her husband, and it was only for rare occassions that she wore these, as she was always worried that something might happen to their delicate construction, as they were made from thin glass, tiny jewels and intricate metalwork. Likewise, the fan she had brought with her today was one she almost never used, as she had preferred the simple blue fan from her days as a Doji for almost every day since she married... sadly that one had been destroyed. It was a beautiful Rokugani fan, black with spines made of white oak inlaid with pale gold, and on its open surface was a dragon twisting around a mountain, its painted scales almost shimmering like gold.

Completing the ensemble was an interesting mask, its like not seen in any shops on the island. The colour-palette was gold, bronze, and brown; the surface had been made to resemble a dragon's scales and the sides had fin-like wings, making the mother of dragons appear like she was some sort of creature from a fantasy.

And the fantastical creature moved with grace and courtesy through the sea that was social interaction, the accent of her Merenaese being considered charming for some, and her understanding of social rules impressing others as she managed to give compliments and flattery without drawing the ire of someone's rival.

Strolling about, his Merenaese boots clicking satisfyingly on the polished floor, Kenzo saw several familiar... well, parts of their faces, anyway. It took him a bit of effort to recognize Ruqqayah. Less so Anzai; after all, he'd already seen the man wearing a mask. Susumu got a smile and a bow as Kenzo passed him.

His casual stroll and conversation brought him, no doubt entirely coincidentally, across Utsusemi's path. He held his fan folded in his hand. At the moment, he didn't especially need it; he'd spotted her across the room, after all, and had plenty of time to prepare himself.

A polite smile on his lips, Kenzo bowed to her, as befit a yojimbo to his charge. "Utsusemi-sama. You're looking very well indeed. What a lovely dress." He said, his tone matching his smile. Alive brown eyes briefly flickered up, then politely back down.

An ensemble of musicians - guitar, lute and violin - had a long program prepared. A few bottles of 20-odd-year dry red wine of the local type of terranegra (the grapes would remember Ricardo Cornejo's final journey to Rokugan) were opened for the enjoyment of the guests, and wine stewards were available to explain the finer qualities of its consumption.

Her eyes, seeming more vibrant with the application of her makeup and the faint shimmer in it, turned to her yojimbo. Utsusemi raised her fan slightly, sizing up Kenzo's attire and how well it fit with his mask... especially how it all worked very well with his natural good looks.

"Thank you, Kenzo-san," her bow was very shallow compared to his. "You do not look too bad yourself, my yojimbo - it seems I was lucky with the vision I had for your mask, seeing how well it works with not only your field of studies, but also your attire."

She smiled politely, though for Kenzo it probably seemed warmer for him. "Are you enjoying yourself so far?" as she asked, her head tilted slightly to the side, admiring the music.

Bellena arrived in a beautiful red dress with golden hair accessories, a mask, and bracelets. The piece that most likely drew most attention however was her emerald and diamond ring in the shape of a tortoise on her hand. She handled herself with decent poise with her fiancé close beside her.

Kenzo bowed again. "I'm sure it was your talents that made the difference, Utsusemi-sama."

"I am, in fact, thank you." The corners of his lips curled up for just a moment. "I had just been observing some of the other guests. There is a great deal of both variety and extravagance to be seen." Indeed, he would have felt a bit self-conscious in his more simple clothing, were it not for the military cut of it. "Nevertheless, some individuals certainly do seem to stand out more than others, at least to my eye." Again, the slight curl to his lips.

"And yourself, Utsusemi-sama?" He asked. Noting her reaction, Kenzo's head tilted as well, eyebrows going up in pleased surprise at the lovely music.

With dresses and suits of gaijin clothing everywhere, it was not difficult to pick out the lion in the crowd. He hadn't bothered one bit with getting additional clothing, and most of the samurai here would recognize what he wore as the clothes he attended the garden party with. That wasn't necessarily a bad thing, as apparently they were well made enough to gain him entrance to the ball.

The most striking thing about the young warrior was that he was unmasked, there was nothing not even a dab of make-up to hide his features and he seemed to like it that way. Though anyone that was looking would note that he carried one at his side, tucked into his obi. He also still wore his daisho at his side, a fact that might of made a few party goers uncomfortable, but he could not leave his honor in the hands of gaijin.

Yasu did his best to present a polite approach to the gaijin though, using what he knew of Rokugani etiquette to give a dignified approach to the coming party, though he didn't expect to make much of a impression when compared to some of the other's of his clan that arrived.

Ruqqayah looked over the program. She hadn't learned anything about dancing or dances. She didn't even really know her people's traditional dances, let alone these. Still, it would be fun to watch and see what they looked like. For now, she decided to retreat to a comfortable chair well within view of the rest of the party and just watch for now.

Yasuhiro had little interest in the Gaijin dances, though he had looked over the names, he was more interested in who was present and what they were wearing. It could better inform him of where exactly they might stand in these matters. Passing through the ball room unaccompanied, he fetched a glass of wine. Though that act in itself seemed more of something he did to keep his hands occupied as the Lion never brought the cup to his lips.

Finding a out of the way corner Yasu settled in ready to wait and watch the proceedings, he might explore a bit later, but for now he merely observed the others in the room.

Ran arrived, dressed in the colours of a phoenix reborn from its own ashes, in reds and golds,, darkest charcoal greys. She wore a fine gaijin-inspired dress, altered to fit Rokugani standards. The mask she wore was created by the talented hand of Agasha Utsusemi, a work of art in and of itself. Her grey-brown hair was swept up and held with delicate accouterments.

Her hand was immediately filled with a flute of red wine, and her eyes scanned the growing group. Her gaze paused at lingered on the form of Gusai Susumu. She had heard the rumours of his usurping of Wataru's troops during their expedition. Her grip on her glass tightened, but she relaxed before the glass broke.

Moving on, she spotted the Dragons, as well as Bellena-sama and Saionji-sama.

She nodded to each pair, but her gaze kept ticking back toward the entrance.

He wasn't sure who the costume represented, exactly. There were faint recollections of stories told in a previous life. There was a tale of a dashing swordsman in black, wanted as a criminal, but a hero for the people. It was a fun idea. The costume had cost more coin than he liked, but it was comfortable and he looked the part.

"Buenas noches, mi amigos. I am here for the party. I hope that won't be a problem?"

The guards smiled and waved the man through.

"Some do stand out more than others indeed," she murmured thoughtfully behind her fluttering fan as she spotted Yasuhiro. Though he was probably standing out for completely different reasons... and still the reasons he wanted to stand out. A part of her had to respect that in a man. Her eyes moved to Bellena and Saionji, a knowing smile in her eyes before looking back to Kenzo.

"I... think I will be having a good time tonight. Our host seems to be sparing no expenses to accomodate for us all," Utsusemi's smile and words held more meaning for Kenzo. For everyone else it was perfectly pleasant conversation between a bodyguard and his charge. "Please, feel free to relax and enjoy yourself this evening, Kenzo-san. I will call upon you when I wish to be escorted home."

She graced him with a gentle bow as he was dismissed to spend the evening as he wished.
