Iuchi Mahasin, Imam of the Purple Mosque

Image

(Status: 5 | Reputation: 4 | Faith: Exceptional)

It is frequent throughout the day in Little Aqahba to hear a beautiful voice calling from the minaret of the Purple Mosque for the faithful to stop and pray through a pious chant. Many foreigners are drawn to that place of faith out of curiosity for that alone. Finding the lovely sight of the imam within, among the breathtaking interiors of the mosque, is often reason enough to stay and hear what she has to say. Her colorful garb serves to accentuate the gorgeous and exotic appearance of the woman who arrived here from the Tarkhanate almost a decade ago on the orders of her liege, Grand Mufti Iuchi Kandagauri.

Mahasin is a strong devotee of The Lost Daughter, a compassionate woman imitating Lady Shinjo's own heart. Having studied in Medinaat al-Salaam, she is also well-educated and familiar with many different languages and cultures. She is welcoming to anyone that is interested in the Faith of the Lost Daughter, and seeks to comfort those in need in turbulent times. She knows that difficulties will be coming and firmly believes that one day the Lost Daughter will return to her worshippers to save them. The more people in the fold before that happens the better, saving that many more lives from whatever terrible doom awaits the world.

Juan Pablo Ildefonso de Almeria y Pavo, Governor of the East Port

Image

(Status: 6 | Reputation: 4 | Faith: Expected)

Called just 'Juanito' by many, the youngest of the de Almeria triplets has risen from the position of a local banker to that of a harbourmaster of Los Muelles de La Tortuga, and then to the governor of the whole East Port. All who watch him run the multicultural port smoothly and without greater social tensions agree that he has not yet advanced above the level of his competence. He maintains good relations with Fuad al-Maut, current commander of the Mamluk regiment guarding Little Aqahba, and can call upon his help if public security in endangered. Easily the most level-headed of the brothers and the least flamboyant, he nevertheless understands the message visible affluence sends to those who are supposed to respect your authority. He thus lives in a large hacienda he has expanded by acquiring smaller plots as land has usually been the collateral in his loans. Today, La Finca de Jacintos, stretching on the eastern slope of Mount Kappa, produces much of the island's agricultural output.

Privately, he's a connoisseur of organ music and oil panting, a devout man, and the main sponsor of all facilities maintained by Padre Alvaro at the Church of Kharsis' Mercy. He's also reputed to be an accomplished destreza fencer, a fact hard to prove as no one challenges the ruling governor. But what is truly outrageous according to many women on the island is that he is still unmarried, and it doesn't look like he's looking.

Muhaki Yubari, Governoress of the West Port

Image

(Status: 6 | Reputation: 3 | Notoriety: 2 | Honour: Untrustworthy)

Yubari has been running the port for just a few years. She took over after her brother had committed suicide because of depression from a failure to effect a qualitative change in governance over the port. Yubari is far less ambitious, and her general approach to life and official capacities seems to be relaxed. She does few heavy-handed things, letting the port run itself with all good and bad that it entails. The revenues from trade and services in the port give her a comfortable, opulent life. If her intrinsically corrupt militia does something drastic in their flawed law enforcement practices, she usually just covers it up with throwing money at the vocal victimised and moves on. She in fact rarely leaves her residence on the hill, mostly because the stench is far less up there, closer to the jungle.

A granddaughter of one of the original Yasuki captains that sailed out with Agasha Kasuga on their first mission to spirit away the Merenaese, she holds a semi-hereditary position. She is of mixed breed though, of a Rokugani father and a blonde Sheel sojourner whose beauty was to kill for, and killing her father did to have a shot at fair-haired babies... what didn't pan out. Her Yasuki forebear was the one to settle the natural harbour that is now the West Port and organise its docks and enterprises. The motley, chaotic den of vice it has come to be is part of her identity thus, and she personally sees no problem with it. In her early 30s, she's a woman who knows how to enjoy life in ways that do not scandalise her too much, though whispers about her lovers both sexes are an evergreen in rumour mill of the West Port. She married young, allegedly out of love, but her chosen died at sea within a month of nuptials. While she has never remarried, she found that the life of a jolly widow, especially one invested with power and money, suits her just fine. After her mother she has taken a taste in Western fashion and indulges in foreign clothes, shoes and accessories to ridiculous extent. That makes it easy to figure out just the right bribe.

Padre Alvaro, Parson of La Iglesia de la Misericordia de Kharsis

Image

(Status: 3 | Reputation: 5 | Faith: Soul Above Question)

A man in a very advanced age, he still remains physically capable, his sermons are loud and clear, his theological mind is sharp and his practical mercy and compassion he shows to those under his care are unparalleled. The only part of his that has given up is his sight, so he often pleads people for the courtesy to read and explain the fine details of things he sees for the glasses he has are not doing a decent job. He is distinguishable everywhere because of his milky-white beard.

He is as old as the early communities on the island, one of the original settlers. He is humbly silent about who he had been before he became a devoted priest of Kharsis. All the premises under his care, the shelter, the school, the orphanage, the church itself, have been built with him being there, among the workers. He enjoys some authority in the Merenaese community but he has never placed himself about the most bereaved common man. If he asks for something substantive, it is always for the others, the parish or his faithful. These days he looks for assistance in renovating the main nave and the portals above the altar as tropical climate of the island took heavy toll on the original paintings of the Passion of Kharsis.

Fuad al-Maut (Moto Futto), Commander of the Mamluk Regiment

Image

(Status: 5 | Reputation: 5 | Faith: Expected)

Fuad has been the captain of the Mamluks stationing in Little Aqahba for two years now. He is a distinguished officer nearing retirement, but matching his battle prowess with wisdom and experience. His war track started 42 years ago, in the Battle of Boujaj that was the final victory for the Takrhanate against the Sheel. Then followed the pacifications of Kharsite rebellions, and finally the great campaign against the Dahab and the Senpet when reunited Unicorn Clan brought all its enemies to submission or flight. He earned his battle honours during the battle against Chephren in Nahr'Umar marches. The cuirass he carries is a trophy he claimed during sacking of the Eye of the Desert, making him look distinct from the light-armoured and white-robed Mamluks. Ever since, he has guarded the borders of the Empire and the end of his career has carried him to its farthest outpost west.

He is a harsh man in demeanour but quiet in speech. His desert lion's eyes are as clear as ever despite his age. His movements are unhurried and pedantic, instilled through a life of merciless drills and loading rotae. He has served in all kinds of arms of the Tarkhanate, infantry, cavalry, artillery and navy, and is probably one of the best battle commanders of combined arms the Tarkhanate currently has, what can only testify to the salience the Khan or Khans ascribe to the Turtle Mountain. He does not debate politics or faith with anyone, however, so his ideas about current disputes among the Unicorn are unknown.
