The Tansaku removed her mask within the mist. From her point of view, it served well enough to conceal her features. Partway through, she pulled out her scroll and incited the incantation. Mist is simply another form of water. If it is so strange as they say, then I should be able to find them...

"I had this theory; that the Curse is spatially localised, it's tethers geographic."

Words appeared in her mind as a face emerged from the mist, and of the mist.

"That is a theory that cannot be thoroughly tested," she countered. She looked around at the road and grew visibly more tense. "What would we do if that was true? Exile ourselves and become like the accursed Tortoise? Commit to heresy like the supposed Ki-Rin?"

"If it has a breaking point, I'd like to know it. In my time I have not managed to determine whether the nature was viral, or a type of a bind or something else. You know that by now?" The mist-man seemed nerdily occupied with his own thoughts.

Akarei continued to look around. "I imagine it is by blood."

Blood.

She clenched her fists. "I am the only Yogo to have come on this journey."

"I am aware. This is why we talk."

Mist-Kocho nodded slowly.

"Many primordial magicks start with manipulation of the flesh. Maho is unlikely to be the only way. Other types don't have to suffer from the shadow of the Ninth if his reach is geographically constrained. Jigoku is a plane with limits, the gates to it - localised."

Another pause.

"If it's in the blood, it may be viral. Diseases are limited in how they spread."

"That would suggest that a gaijin magician would be taken in by the Taint." The Tansaku crossed her arms and then sighed. "It may be worthwhile to capture one of them and send them back to the Empire to see if the effects erode their body. I will have to bring this to the attention of my superiors."

Or perhaps the crew of the Yamato Maru would heed that order.

Akarei looked to her palms and then back to the apparition. "Are you suggesting that it is in the physical blood itself? I believed it to be by ancestral ties, a purely mystical approach. But even if it is a viral phenomenon, that does not answer how we may cure it."

"It doesn't. But my granddaughter created you for a reason. You have one duty, and I am glad that after four centuries one of you have actually stopped behaving as if their butt was glued to Seikitsu and have gone out to seek answers."

The man seemed bemused.

"You flatter me," she stated with a flat tone, "But I did not come here for reassurances. I am dedicated to the cause. What I need are the answers you mentioned."

"I would not bother making the effort to talk to you if I had them. I came for reassurances. It would be a waste to see you give up."

"Then you should be glad to know I do not intend on giving up." The priestess placed a hand on her own mask and then smirked. "Perhaps when I finish this task, I will be able to leave this mask behind."

"Why would you do that?"

The woman shrugged. "If I am free of the Curse, then my Duty to the Scorpion is complete. And if I marry out of the Clan, I would want to dedicate myself to my new home." She continued to trace a finger across her mask. "That does not mean I intend on betraying my original Clan. It simply means that I would be ready to leave it behind.

"I would be ready to love my new family, so to speak."

The man was silent.

"Then do it. For you own sake, and all the others. I want to see this spite unmade. W don't deserve this fate, but we will not be deserving of a better one if we stop."

The redhead nodded. "I will not rest until my duty is complete." She then let out a soft sigh. "Although it is difficult, sometimes, to press forward without knowing one's path."

"You don't know it. You make it. No-one gave me plans to destroy the Castle of Murder. But I did it." Kocho scoffed.
